New Talk Alert.. The Artist’s Juggle with the only & only @ellastrated !! 🫶🏻

How do you build a creative career that evolves with life’s seasons?

Ella Kasperowicz AKA Ellastrated is a Nottingham-based illustrator who has built a wonderfully varied career from her playful, colourful illustrations; her practice spans client work, commissions, products, publishing and her hugely relatable personal comics.

In this honest and open conversation, Ella will take us behind the scenes of that journey - from finding her voice and building an audience online, to illustrating children’s books, developing products and, more recently, figuring out what her practice looks like alongside being a mum to her daughter Maxie (and cavapoochon Dora!).

A creative career rarely follows a straight line. Our lives change, our priorities shift, and the way we work has to evolve with life’s flow!

What we’ll be chatting about:

✨ The art of the juggle | See how Ella has built a practice that spans commercial illustration, custom commissions, and her own product range, and made all three work together.

✨ Creativity & motherhood | An honest look at what it’s like to make work while raising a family, how Ella’s day-to-day practice has changed, and where she’s finding inspiration in this new season of life.

✨ Behind the books | A peek behind the scenes of illustrating three children’s books, and how book illustration fits into a career that also includes clients, commissions, and products.

✨ Finding your people online | See how Ella uses her personal comics and Instagram to connect with an audience, build a loyal following, and discover opportunities for her wider practice.

✨ Lessons from the journey | Reflections on what’s worked, what she’d do differently, and advice for anyone trying to build, or rebuild, a sustainable creative practice around a busy life

Meet Maisy & Sarah of Small Fry 👋🏼

Small Fry Collective is a creative hub founded in 2018, hosting a range of events, talks, projects, and workshops. Small Fry brings together creatives from across the globe to share and exchange insights, knowledge and encouragement.

The name ‘Small Fry’ originally spawned from a dirty fry-up menu. Seeing those words in print it hit us that it actually encompassed exactly the feelings we had at the time; just on the brink of leaving university, and feeling this notion of being a small fish in a big pond. How and where do you start?

Alongside different collaborators along the way Small Fry has grown from initally being a one time pop up print fair, to an international eduational creative community. Hosting sessions on freelancing and creative business skills to practical sessions on handcrafted illustration, digital editing and DIY animation presented by us and creative guests.

In 2021 Sarah Wilson @sarah.littleblackcat joined me, Maisy Summer @maisysummer, and jumped aboard the Small Fry team. We both hail from the East Midlands, however our paths didn’t cross until we made the move to to study Illustration with Animation at Manchester School of Art.

In Manchester was where we began to hone our illustration skills, take those inital steps into the creative industries, meet a lot of our ‘Friends of Small Fry’ who you’ll hear within our books Draw In | Draw Out.

We very much still resonate with that feeling of being little fish in a big pond, we don’t think it ever leaves you. Though having this wonderful growing creative community means we have lots of friendly faces to turn to when we need some guidance or support. You’re now part of this community too! 🐟🎣🐡

Be creative with ways to diversify your income ✏️

Since becoming a Mum, I’ve had to work smarter not harder to make a living from my illustration, and think about different income streams like wholesale, licensing and content creation.

Be yourself 🌞

In the age of Al art, the most valuable thing you can be as an artist is human. Let your personality shine through your work, talk about things that are important to you and embrace the silly little things that make you, you.

Show up! 😎

Put time into your online and in person presence, share your work without worrying about it being perfect. I’ve found that people are more likely to buy from me or commission me if they have met me, or feel like they can relate to me.

📍15th October | 6pm on Zoom Talk + Q&A
📹 Recorded for catch up
