Venezuela Earthquake Recovery: Connecting Teams to Map Risks and Support Safer Rebuilding

Within 48 hours of the June 24 earthquakes in Venezuela, SmartAID Magen Search & Rescue deployed a 17 member team to work alongside local emergency services in the search for survivors.

As needs changed, our response expanded to clean energy units, clean water systems and telecommunications.

Today, our SmartAID team on the ground is focusing on the next phase of recovery by keeping our government, non government groups and researchers partners connected as they assess the risks communities still face.

Working alongside the Geomatics Laboratory at the Central University of Venezuela (LABGEOM UCV), focusing on the second phase of field assessments in El Junquito and La Guaira.

The research team is using SLAM LiDAR technology to create detailed 3D maps of areas affected by landslides, debris flows and rockfalls following the earthquakes.

SmartAID is providing connectivity, keeping the teams connected and online throughout this fieldwork.

These maps will be combined with information about slopes, geology, vegetation and drainage to help authorities identify unstable areas and make better decisions about rehabilitation and where it is safe to rebuild.

An earthquake’s impact does not end when the search and rescue phase is over. Roads and hillsides can remain dangerous long afterwards.

Our work continues alongside local specialists, putting technology to practical use as communities recover. by @smartaidint

📊 Data at the Service of Action in Goma, DRC

This is what the partnership between @smartaidint, @stempower_inc and @dhlexpress is about: giving young people access to the technology, skills and practical tools they can use to solve real problems in their own communities.

At our STEM Center at the University of Goma, students have now started a four week training program in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Statistics and GIS Mapping.

The students are working with tools including Python, R/RStudio, ArcGIS and Google Earth Engine, while learning how to collect, analyze, map and visualize data.

The bigger goal goes beyond learning software.

In a region where communities face complex development and humanitarian challenges, among them the current outbreak of Ebola, massive movement of internally displaced people due to prolonged war, good data can help people understand what is happening, identify needs faster and make better decisions.

Our goal is to help students in Goma to gain the skills to turn raw information into something useful for research, local development and humanitarian action.

Through the partnership of SmartAID, STEMpower and DHL, the STEM Center is helping build local technical capacity inside the university and creating opportunities for the next generation of Congolese students to work with technologies that are shaping their community and entering the global world.

And looking at these classrooms full of students learning, questioning and practicing, you can see why this matters.

Technology becomes far more powerful when the knowledge to use it stays within the community. by @smartaidint

When a disaster hits, one of the first things communities can lose is exactly what everyone suddenly needs most: power, communications and connectivity to their families and those wanting to help them.

This is why we built the SmartVan in Australia.

Our new SmartAID SmartVan in New South Wales, Australia, brings these capabilities directly into disaster affected communities, while also supporting the local government and non-government first responders already working on the ground.

That distinction matters to us.

We are not coming in to replace local systems or build a parallel response. We bring technology, equipment & the know how that can strengthen the people & groups who know their communities and the topography the best and will still be there long after the emergency is over.

The SmartVan provides satellite connectivity, emergency power and communications support when normal infrastructure is damaged or unavailable. It supports frontline teams and government partners, while also giving affected communities a way to reconnect with family and access essential information and services.

In the past 5 years we have already been deploying Smart Trailers in the United States. Now we are expanding it in Australia, taking what we have learned and adapting it locally.

The NSW SmartVan was developed together with St John Ambulance NSW, @telstra, @Ericsson, @ChargeSpot and the Wolper Jewish Hospital Health Foundation.

For us, this is part of something much bigger.

We believe there is a real opportunity to build a global network of mobile technology response units, positioned in disaster prone communities and ready before the next emergency happens.

Getting there will take us to bring in more technology companies, investors, foundations, philanthropists and people who believe that our units can play a critical and practical role in saving lives and strengthening communities in real time.

We are building them, we know it works, we proved it works, and we are looking for the additional partners who want to join us and take it further across the United States, Australia and beyond.

Every day, humanitarian workers step into places hit by war, disaster and crisis to support people they have never met. They do it under immense pressure, often risking their own safety.

At SmartAID, we believe they deserve more than our gratitude. They deserve protection, reliable technology and practical tools that help them stay safe, communicate and reach the people who need them.

To every humanitarian worker and volunteer who keeps showing up, even in the most difficult circumstances: thank you. We stand with you.

In Colombia, we’re applying what 30 years of experience in disaster and conflict zones has taught our teams: listen first, work with what already exists, and build from there.

Our approach combines local knowledge, expertise and innovation with proven technologies and solutions from around the world from clean water to data collection to clean energy and connectivity. We don’t introduce technology simply because it is new and exciting.

We identify the need and what type of technologies can offer a solution, while strengthening existing capabilities and improve the response of our local government, charity partners as well as local affected communities.

Financial support is a priority because it allows SmartAID to move quickly and, just as importantly, ensure that solutions introduced during an emergency are properly integrated, installed, operated and maintained for the long term.

Please support our efforts, donate and learn more about our efforts in Colombia in our website:

From Sub-Saharan Africa to the World 🌎

At @smartaidint, we believe lasting humanitarian impact is created by empowering and equipping people with technology, practical skills, and opportunity not dependency.

Together with our partners; @STEMpowe and @dhlexpress, we are expanding a proven STEM model that equips young people with hands on education in technology, AI, engineering, electronics, drones, and entrepreneurship; giving them the skills to solve real world challenges, strengthen disaster preparedness and response, and build stronger, more resilient communities.

After establishing STEM Centers across Sub Saharan Africa, this initiative which daily serves tens of thousands of students will now be entering, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, the Far East, and beyond.

What makes this journey especially meaningful is that the knowledge driving this expansion comes from local African educators, technicians, and innovators demonstrating that innovation and leadership know no borders, and that communities can inspire and strengthen one another across continents.

This is the power of partnership: humanitarian organizations, the private corporate sector, education institutions and local communities working together to create opportunity, build resilience, and prepare the next generation of leaders.

Together we are turning knowledge into opportunity and opportunity into lasting impact. by @smartaidint

🇻🇪💔When we think about humanitarian aid, we picture rescuers, doctors, food, and supplies
⛑️📦🛠️🚑🥪

We rarely think about data.📊 📈🧑🏻‍💻

Yet after a disaster, one of the biggest challenges is making sure the right help reaches the right people. Without shared information, some communities receive duplicate aid while others are unintentionally left behind.

🤖This is where AI can become a powerful force for good. Not by replacing human beings, but by helping them coordinate better, identify urgent needs, and make every act of generosity go further.

🇮🇱In this conversation, Shachar Zahavi, founder of SmartAID @smartaidint, he explains how AI is strengthening the humanitarian response following Venezuela’s devastating earthquake.

How else do you think AI can help repair the world?

Some of the hardest moments in a disaster don’t happen beneath the rubble.

They happen outside.

They happen when mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, children, and grandparents wait for hours, sometimes days, hoping for news about someone they love.

The SmartAID Magen Search & Rescue Team doesn’t only search collapsed buildings. Alongside our rescue specialists, our psychological support professionals stand with the families who wait in fear and uncertainty.

While our rescuers fight for every possible life beneath the concrete, professionals from our team is there to listen, comfort, support, and remind families that they are not facing this unimaginable moment alone.

Sometimes we bring the news they have been praying for. Sometimes we simply hold a hand, share a tear, or sit silently beside them.

Because humanitarian response isn’t only about saving the people trapped beneath the rubble. It’s also about caring for the hearts breaking above it.

❤️ Every family deserves compassion.

🇨🇩 Democratic Republic of the Congo

Every Ebola outbreak is ultimately about people, families, children, and healthcare workers doing everything they can to protect their communities.

That’s why SmartAID, together with STEMpower, is working alongside local health institutions across Goma to help nearly 500,000 people prepare before the next outbreak strikes.

We are installing more satellite connectivity, providing laptops and digital tools so health workers can quickly share information, coordinate with hospitals and authorities, and respond faster when every minute matters.

At the same time, a training program is being offered to students, and young people in Ebola prevention, proper hygiene, and safe soap production building knowledge and local capacity that will continue protecting communities.

Real humanitarian aid isn’t just about responding to emergencies. It’s about helping communities become stronger, safer, and better prepared for whatever comes next. ❤️
