Fuel, fertilizer, and freight costs are affecting growers across the green industry, from production through delivery

In his State of the Industry presentation at Cultivate’26, Dr. Charlie Hall projected potential increases of approximately 10% for fuel and energy, 8% for fertilizer, and 6% for freight and trucking.

For tree growers, getting more trees on each truck is one way to help manage those costs. Commercial Smart Pots produce compact root balls that weigh less, take up less space, are easier to harvest, handle and ship.

Urban Forest Nursery describes the difference they've experienced: “With compact rootballs, which both weigh less and take up less space, we are now able to pack many more trees onto a single semi for shipping to customers in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Alaska, and western parts of Canada.”

That means spreading the cost of a truckload across more trees, reducing the freight cost per tree.

A little twist on the Three Sisters garden 🌻🫘🌱

The traditional Three Sisters method brings corn, climbing beans, and squash together. Rooted in Indigenous agriculture in North America and practiced for centuries, it gives each crop a role: corn supports the beans, beans capture nitrogen with help from bacteria on their roots, and squash shades the soil to help retain moisture and reduce weeds.

This garden swaps corn for sunflowers as the climbing support for beans, all growing alongside squash in a Smart Pot Round Raised Bed Planter!
