The boys struggled in their final round to finish in 10th place in the Otter Invitational.

“We are disappointed in how we performed this week but it wasn’t a problem of being mentally tough enough or attitudes, or effort. We simply have to be a more fundamentally sound team on the course. This was a tough course & a tough field but that’s why we play in events like this so we can learn more about our golf team. I have always advocated for a stronger schedule and that’s why we travel. To give our boys the opportunity to get better through adversity. I believe we got better this week. We have to continue to trust our process here at South and get back to work and focus on the things that have made us successful year in and year out.”
- Head Coach, Marcus Smith

Freshman Dayne Schmidke has made a strong impression to start his intercollegiate career with the @smccmgolf program, posting two top-10 finishes in September to earn Chick-fil-A South Mountain September Student-Athlete of the Month honors.

Originally from Eaton, Colo., Schmidke placed fourth at the South Mountain Invitational at -10 (203). He then moved up 15 spots after a six-under 66 in the final round to tie for ninth at -9 (207) at The Poss High County Shootout from Sept. 21-22 in Ruidoso, N.M.

Schmidke got into the sport through his grandfather and a brother who played in college. He has excelled early with the Cougars and is adjusting to life as a college student-athlete.

"The transition to college golf has been harder than I expected," he said in a text message. "The workouts are difficult, and the amount of work we put on the golf course is a lot. But it's good because I've always wanted to get better and get to the highest level."

He credits #SMCC head coach Marcus Smith and the new on-campus practice facility for their effect on his early performance and development.

"It's really nice to have a facility to work at on campus. It's nice to have an area where you can work on shorter clubs that will help your scoring on the course," he said in a text message. "Coach always pushes us. He pushes us to be the best and to make us better every day. I think it's important to have a coach like that."

Schmidke has several more fall tournaments before the official spring season and looks forward to improving as the team seeks its ninth NJCAA Division II National Championship since 2001 and its first since 2022.

"The goals for myself are to just get better throughout the season and get to the next level," he said in a text message. "For the team, the goal is just to make everyone better and to win a national championship." taken in South Mountain Community College by @smccmgolf
