Freshman Dayne Schmidke has made a strong impression to start his intercollegiate career with the @smccmgolf program, posting two top-10 finishes in September to earn Chick-fil-A South Mountain September Student-Athlete of the Month honors.

Originally from Eaton, Colo., Schmidke placed fourth at the South Mountain Invitational at -10 (203). He then moved up 15 spots after a six-under 66 in the final round to tie for ninth at -9 (207) at The Poss High County Shootout from Sept. 21-22 in Ruidoso, N.M.

Schmidke got into the sport through his grandfather and a brother who played in college. He has excelled early with the Cougars and is adjusting to life as a college student-athlete.

"The transition to college golf has been harder than I expected," he said in a text message. "The workouts are difficult, and the amount of work we put on the golf course is a lot. But it's good because I've always wanted to get better and get to the highest level."

He credits #SMCC head coach Marcus Smith and the new on-campus practice facility for their effect on his early performance and development.

"It's really nice to have a facility to work at on campus. It's nice to have an area where you can work on shorter clubs that will help your scoring on the course," he said in a text message. "Coach always pushes us. He pushes us to be the best and to make us better every day. I think it's important to have a coach like that."

Schmidke has several more fall tournaments before the official spring season and looks forward to improving as the team seeks its ninth NJCAA Division II National Championship since 2001 and its first since 2022.

"The goals for myself are to just get better throughout the season and get to the next level," he said in a text message. "For the team, the goal is just to make everyone better and to win a national championship."

The @smccmgolf program had its two teams finish first and second at the season-opening South Mountain Invitational Sept. 2-3 at Las Colinas Golf Course in Queen Creek, Ariz. The Cougars' squads finished at -40 (812) and -27 (825) over the 54 holes to take the top two spots among five schools competing at the event. Individually, freshman Malakai Jazayeri finished second at -13 (200), sophomore Quinton Breuer and freshman Dayne Schmidke tied for third at -12 (201), freshman Cody Richardson was fifth at -8 (205), and freshmen Eugenio Martinez and Gavin Lynn tied for sixth at -7 (206).

Jazayeri turned in an outstanding performance, edging his teammates Breuer and Schmidke for second by one stroke. He opened with a four-under 67 that featured four birdies and zero bogeys. He kept playing bogey-free golf in his second round and carded another six birdies to finish at six-under 65.

In round three, he birdied the first two holes, added an eagle three on the par-five No. 15, and recorded his first and only bogey on the par-three No. 8. That ended a streak of 25 straight holes without going over par.

Breuer had a strong debut for his sophomore campaign after earning NJCAA Second Team All-American honors as a freshman. He posted six birdies in both his first and second rounds to post identical scores of four-under 67. In the third round, he did not record a bogey and added four birdies to card his third 67 of the tournament.

Schmidke matched Breuer at -12 to tie for third in his first tournament as a Cougar. Like Jazayeri, he recorded just one bogey over the 54 holes. In round one, he went bogey-free with five birdies to finish at five-under 66. Round two saw him produce three birdies to finish at two-under 69. Finally, he had five more birdies in round three and posted another five-under 66.

Sophomore Quinton Breuer of @smccmgolf has been named the Chick-Fil-A South Mountain August Student-Athlete of the Month. Breuer enters the 2026-27 season with a great deal of momentum after earning NJCAA Second Team All-American and ACCAC Division II Player of the Year honors as a freshman.

Most recently, Breuer posted a fourth-place finish at the 2026 Arizona Stroke Play Championships from Aug. 20-23 at Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club in Wickenburg, Ariz.

"I felt my play was very solid throughout the whole tournament," Breuer said in a text message. "My putting was definitely what helped me the most. The course was very challenging and required a lot of preparation, so it felt great to finish fourth. There were a lot of great players in the field, so I was very grateful to finish as well as I did."

SMCC head coach Marcus Smith had high praise for his sophomore at the event.

"Quinton's play at the Arizona Stroke Play Championships was extremely impressive considering how strong the field was," Smith said. "There was a lot on the line, and for him to be able to perform to that level with that quality of a field speaks to Quinton as a competitor. He embodies the idea of being where his feet are, something I hope all our student-athletes can do."

First up for Breuer and #SMCC is a challenging slate of 2026 fall tournaments, beginning with the South West Collegiate Invite Sept. 2-3 at Las Colinas Golf Course in Phoenix. He is eager to get back on the road with his teammates.

"My goals for this fall and spring are to have fun and do as much as I can to help the team succeed this year," he added via text message. "Some of my favorite memories from my freshman year were our trips to Mississippi and New Mexico. I love traveling with the team and spending time with the boys on the road.
