Lens Lamp by @atelier.wama + @ninaandcodesign

The dimmable wall lights, handmade locally by Atelier WA MA and us, show the @smile.materials lens-waste application in lighting by using up leftovers from the project, paired with a tactile switch cast from aluminium stair nosings salvaged from the original site. The tactile chunky dimmer plus the dim-to-warm bulb by @tala means users can ramp up the brightness while trying on sunglasses 🌞😎

We’re finalists!

Proud to be shortlisted in the @isoladesigngroup Awards for Innovation, alongside four other brilliant projects.

These awards judge originality, craftsmanship and sustainability together, without trading one off against another. That’s a standard we share. Recycled materials should earn their place in an interior on design merit, with the sustainability story as an added strength.

Huge congratulations to our fellow finalists. It’s an honour to be in such strong company 🌱 by @smile.materials

MONC Monmouth Street store is flanked by translucent recycled plastic panels that glimmer with flecks of discarded lenses. Eyewear lenses are a mixture of plastics not municipally recycled in the UK - they mainly end up being incinerated.

This stunning sheet material by @smile.materials was especially developed for the project, making use of all the discarded prescription lenses and demonstration lenses that @monceyewear had diligently collected during their ten years of existence. Additional kilos from opticians and their lens partner @zeissvision were needed to make up the volume of waste required to produce enough material.

The development of this circular material, which can be reprocessed again by @smile.materials , demonstrates the potential of a broader industry solution for lens waste in the UK…. @zeissvision @smile.materials please keep talking 🤝

Exuding an earthy warmth, Heron in Butterscotch boasts a dappled palette of tawny brown, terracotta, and soft apricot, all infused with vibrant undertones of vivacious orange.

Beginning its life as white goods, the since discarded material that lays the foundations for the Heron mix takes on a whole new appearance with this colour wash. Much alike the hues found in sophisticated, sand blasted marble, the sun-soaked combination is guaranteed to brighten up interior schemes.

We believe the journey to circularity is a collaborative one – a belief that has shaped much of our evolution over the past year, and indeed the past 30.

With that in mind, we’re pleased to share that Smile Materials has acquired the Le Pavé® brand, the French circular materials name known for turning recycled plastic into distinctive surfaces and supporting more than 2,000 projects, including the production of 11,000 seats for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Production of @le.pave materials is being established at Smile Materials’ facility in Swansea, Wales, while the two brands continue with their own identities and markets. The move brings together two histories and two bodies of expertise around a shared conviction: that waste can be transformed into high-performance, desirable materials, and that circularity can support both creative ambition and practical application.

At Smile, we’ve always believed that a surface made from would-be waste can change how people think about a space, but there’s nothing quite like seeing it in a room it was made for. So, when a fellow British manufacturer chose our newly launched Smile Minerals to shape a whole bathroom setting, we couldn’t have been happier.

Meet @romanltd, one of the UK’s leading showering brands, now showcasing our 100% recycled solid surface across shower panelling, a vanity and a splashback in their showroom.

It's not just about what goes in – it's about what doesn't.

Most solid surface is made from virgin petrochemicals, then sent to landfill or incineration when it's done.

Smile Minerals Recycled Solid Surface is made entirely from what already exists: reclaimed solid surface recovered through @mtrl.library, and reclaimed PET. And when its working life is over, we take it back and make it into something new.

Same surface. Around 90% less projected embodied carbon.*

Samples available via link in bio.

*projected embodied carbon of 5.66kg CO2e/m2 (A1 to A3, 12mm equivalent), with an Environmental Product Declaration coming soon. by @smile.materials
