Lens Lamp by @atelier.wama + @ninaandcodesign

The dimmable wall lights, handmade locally by Atelier WA MA and us, show the @smile.materials lens-waste application in lighting by using up leftovers from the project, paired with a tactile switch cast from aluminium stair nosings salvaged from the original site. The tactile chunky dimmer plus the dim-to-warm bulb by @tala means users can ramp up the brightness while trying on sunglasses 🌞😎

MONC Monmouth Street store is flanked by translucent recycled plastic panels that glimmer with flecks of discarded lenses. Eyewear lenses are a mixture of plastics not municipally recycled in the UK - they mainly end up being incinerated.

This stunning sheet material by @smile.materials was especially developed for the project, making use of all the discarded prescription lenses and demonstration lenses that @monceyewear had diligently collected during their ten years of existence. Additional kilos from opticians and their lens partner @zeissvision were needed to make up the volume of waste required to produce enough material.

The development of this circular material, which can be reprocessed again by @smile.materials , demonstrates the potential of a broader industry solution for lens waste in the UK…. @zeissvision @smile.materials please keep talking 🤝

Introducing our roster of makers and collaborators for the recently opened @monceyewear Monmouth Street store.

All the bespoke elements of the project (almost everything) were crafted in close collaboration with local makers, not only as individuals, but by bringing together talented people working across different disciplines.

Last week we were in Parliament; this week, we’re setting up shop on the high street.

The Design Council’s Good Growth Design Lab is officially OPEN for London Design Festival (@l_d_f_official) and Shoreditch Design Week(@shoreditchdesignweek). We’re stepping out from behind our desks to bring our latest Design Economy insights off the page, into the real world, and directly to you.

Our team is in the space until Thursday, ready to talk about the power of design. We’ll be diving into how design acts as a massive economic driver, generating more value for the UK than retail, supporting millions of jobs, and shaping the green transitions our communities need.

Come by, test out the interactive displays, and check out Arup’s (@arupuk) brilliant community bulletin board from 2050, an imaginative look at how design will pave the way toward fairer, greener, and more prosperous futures.

📍 Where: 133–135 Bethnal Green Rd, E2 7DG
📅 When: 15-17 Sept | 10am–5pm
🎟️ Entry: Free
