New Western Memorial Regional Hospital has earned both an Award of Excellence and the prestigious Schreyer Award at the 2026 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards, one of the country's highest honours for consulting engineering projects.

The Schreyer Award is the competition's top distinction, presented to the projects that best showcase exceptional engineering, innovation, and technical achievement.

Smith + Andersen provided the mechanical, electrical, communications, security, and intelligent integrated systems design for the hospital, along with sustainability services through Footprint. The facility features Canada's largest geothermal system in a healthcare setting and serves as a critical healthcare hub for western Newfoundland.

The Humber Cultural Hub has earned First Place in the Educational Facilities, New Building category of the 2025-2026 ASHRAE Region II Technology Awards.

Located at Humber College's Lakeshore Campus, the project showcases how innovative, sustainable design can support learning, performance, and student living spaces while dramatically reducing environmental impact.

At the heart of the facility is a 100% ground-source geothermal system featuring 95 boreholes and advanced heat recovery technology that captures, stores, and reuses energy throughout the building. Designed to perform 35% better than the ASHRAE baseline, the project also achieved Zero Carbon Building certification.

Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this award-winning project to life!

From upgrades at Robson Square and the Evergreen Building in downtown Vancouver to projects at UBC's Anthropology and Sociology (ANSO) Building and Perkins&Will's Vancouver office in Arthur Erickson Place, these spaces reflect the lasting influence of one of Canada's most celebrated architects. Meet The Fee Burners, Smith + Andersen's own house band and the first band featured in our EcoJam Vancouver lineup spotlight series!

Every week leading up to EcoJam Vancouver, we’ll be spotlighting one of the amazing bands taking the stage for our inaugural event.

The Fee Burners are a group of coworkers in our BC offices united by a shared love of music. What started as a few conversations around the office quickly turned into jam sessions, set lists, and a band ready to trade project deadlines for guitar riffs.
