🎉 We’re excited to announce our 2025–27 Arts & Cultural Organizing Fellow, Siena Smith (@smither_).

The Arts & Cultural Organizing Fellowship supports emerging artists and cultural organizers who demonstrate a strong commitment both to their artistic practice and to the principles of Ujima. Through this fellowship, Siena will join Ujima's Arts & Cultural Organizing community, contributing to and drawing from a network of artists, organizers, and cultural workers who are advancing new models of creativity, investment, and care.

Siena Smith is an artist who works with drawing, painting, Jacquard weaving and collage to process the complexities of everyday emotions, memories and struggles centering Black life, culture and womanhood. She earned her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in Textiles and MFA at School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Fiber and Material Studies. She is interested in how repetition, tactility, material and rhythm of 2-D and textile mediums carry the essence of Black Diasporic personal, collective and spiritual histories and futures.

💫 Join us in welcoming Sienna and learn more at www.ujimaboston.com/blog.

Inspired by the craft and artistry of practitioners like @tookiedidit 🩷✨🙏🏾
Trying to figure out how we can move through this world with ways of knowing that we learn or already have access to.
What systems are causing discrimination, oppression and death?
What systems hold culture, care, growth and love?
Black braiding, hair and tactile care as wayfinding, path making, message carriers, mathematics, culture bearers and expressions …

This Black History Month, we’ve partnered with Good Black Art to highlight four of the many remarkable artists supported by the organization—and the cultural traditions that inspire them.

“Weaving is one of the many hearts of Black American and Black Diasporic culture, expression and struggle,” says artist Siena Smith. “The warp and weft materials of my fabrics hold in tension patterns of ancestral desires, expressions, rebellions and futures. My family has nurtured the importance of blankets (to keep you warm), church hats (to arrive in style when worshipping), quilts (to tell a story about each fabric pieced together), pillowcases (to rest your head at night) and clothes (to match what's on the inside).

Working with and around the limitations of the Jacquard loom gives me the opportunity to insert Black weaving traditions and craft that I know my ancestors worked so hard to preserve.”

Swipe for a closer look at Smith’s work and weaving process. Discover more from Good Black Art at the link in our bio. by @smither_

This is my decision (Thank you Tems), Jacquard woven cotton and wool, pony beads, viscose thread, 48x25 inches, 2024

Been thinking a lot about witnessing/processing/experiencing/resisting constant, violent systems of oppression i.e. anti-Blackness, homophobia, transphobia, colorism, white supremacy, settler colonialism, imperialism, genocide (free 🇺🇸🇭🇹🇨🇩🇵🇸🇱🇧🇸🇩🇪🇹…), racialized capitalism, commercial art market, health insurance / health care, job insecurity / unemployment, housing insecurity, gentrification, unnatural disasters —— not mutually exclusive and that’s only naming a very few.

Also thinking about loved ones, home cooking, grief, RnB, tea, Hip-Hop, rage, braiding, love, weaving, burnout and struggle,
how to be accountable, intentional and show up for each other.

Very much so inspired by @doechii and her performance of “denial is a river” and “boiled peanuts” on the Colbert show.

Sending love and care,
Siena by @smither_
