… in time
Before clocks, incense was the instrument.
For one day of Design Vancouver Festival, Ellipsis and @sml_studio keep time by light, sound, taste, & scent — for as long as a cone burns. A custom cone, scented to the West Coast palette, & a menu written for the festival. taken in Granville Island by @sml_studio

Finally, an outside patio…just in time for fall.

We designed this space alongside @sml_studio & brought it to life piece by piece with @repertoire_projects.

Thank you both for the care, craft, & effort poured into this project as we continue to expand the moments we’re looking to make — inside, outside, & somewhere in between. taken in Granville Island by @sml_studio

A little thing we’ve been working on for @designvanfest

Come by this Saturday and experience time in different ways with us.

Scent, taste, light, sound, and smoke…

We’ve paired a custom incense by @sml_studio with two limited-edition drinks, each exploring the same moment in a different way.

The first 100 guests will also receive an incense cone to take home. taken in Granville Island by @sml_studio

Something new has sprouted at the Waterfall Building.

Our experiment in outdoor patio furniture came to life over a single day on site - though it was many months in the making, from conversations with the city and strata council to coordination with the maker.

We chose translucent FRP grating for its durability in Vancouver’s humid climate; its colour and grid texture echoes Nick Milkovich and Arthur Erickson’s original courtyard design. Part sculpture, part social connector - hopefully a little of both for the city.

Thank you to @ellipsis.ca for trusting us to try something that’s not been done before, and to @repertoire_projects for all your hard work in helping us prototype from idea to reality.

Transforming an underused rooftop podium into leisure hospitality, Cloud Padel integrates padel courts with café, retail, and spectator zones: a recreational pavilion where watching matters as much as playing.

This staircase does double duty: it moves people and light.
We used perforated metal treads to let daylight filter all the way down to the basement, turning the whole skylit stairwell into a glowing vertical column through the three floors.
At the bottom level, we switched to solid wood treads to wrap around a small mechanical room tucked underneath.
It’s one of those moment where function and design clicks when working with an existing building. by @sml_studio

Planning permission granted ✨

We’re pleased to announce planning approval for our mews renovation project in the City of Westminster.

Navigating pre-application processes, historical considerations, and multiple risk items has been a journey of persistence and collaboration. This extensive renovation includes a change of use, basement extension, and facade alterations; adapting a historic mews for modern day living.

On to the next chapter 🧱

Melted butter, reimagined.

The lacquered counter reflects the flow of melted butter, transforming a simple ingredient into design language and creating a glossy meeting point for craft and café culture.

To bring this vision to life, we explored a dozen material options from Corian, micro cement to precast concrete, and even tiles. The counter had to be locally available and capture that perfect buttery yellow. It took a brave client willing to try something new, a contractor who pushes boundaries, and seamless coordination across multiple trades to make it happen. The result: a counter that feels as rich as butter, and a space we couldn’t be more delighted with.
