A few moments from our first Design Week at Ellipsis. We explored how we experience time through scent, taste & the slow burn of incense.

It was a chance to slow down together & notice the little things: what unfolds, what fades & what stays with us.

… in time
Before clocks, incense was the instrument.
For one day of Design Vancouver Festival, Ellipsis and @sml_studio keep time by light, sound, taste, & scent — for as long as a cone burns. A custom cone, scented to the West Coast palette, & a menu written for the festival.

Finally, an outside patio…just in time for fall.

We designed this space alongside @sml_studio & brought it to life piece by piece with @repertoire_projects.

Thank you both for the care, craft, & effort poured into this project as we continue to expand the moments we’re looking to make — inside, outside, & somewhere in between.

Studios, conversations and creative experiences. I spent Saturday exploring the Open Studios in the Armoury District as a Design Vancouver Festival Ambassador, and left feeling inspired by the incredible people and creative energy that makes Vancouver’s design community so special! A few 📷 from the day.

#vancouverdesignfestival was off to a strong start yesterday! We particularly enjoyed our tour of @build_addapt attainable housing which started as a passion project rethinking the Vancouver Special by @leckiestudio

Morning coffee at Ellipsis Cafe - a modern, fresh-industrial space designed by @sml_studio that perfectly brought to life architect Arthur Erickson’s original work with curated pops of colour and materials that complement the form and beauty of the furniture and objects within the space.

Ceramist @janakilarsen open studio served as a welcome reprieve from the busyness of the day- where she displayed beautifully curated work celebrating the process of making, proving that there is beauty in imperfection.

#vancouverdesign #industrialdesign #designweek #openstudio ~ Stay tuned for another round of design events and studio visits next weekend!

Huge thank you to our lead fabricator Robin Watts and his brother LJ Johnston for their efforts, expertise, and oversight on this incredible installation at the Waterfall Building courtyard! During the past week we received so many encouraging and enthusiastic comments while we worked, it’s absolutely heartwarming to feel so welcomed by the community. We cannot be more grateful to @sml_studio and @ellipsis.ca for bringing us onboard, trusting us with your design, and sharing the limelight. We hope that we can continue to participate in our incredible design community in such meaningful ways far into the future. May the slivers and blisters be our badge of honour. Come see during the @designvanfest !

Food brings us together.

Food culture is shaped by more than what we eat. The objects, spaces, atmosphere, and conversations surrounding a meal all influence how we experience it. During Design Vancouver Festival, chefs, architects, and designers explore these connections through dinners, tastings, workshops, installations, and gatherings.

Explore the Armoury/South Granville/Granville Island Design District
September 19 | 10am–4pm

Home to a concentration of architecture, interiors, furniture, and design practices, this part of Vancouver has long been an important hub for the city’s design community.

On September 19, studios across the district will open their doors. Drop in, meet the teams, see where the work happens, and make an afternoon of exploring the neighbourhood.

Explore participating studios and plan your route with the Festival Map. Link in bio.
