This flower lived on an 1800s appliqueฬ quilt - now it is carved eternally into silver ๐Ÿชก๐Ÿงบ๐Ÿ’›

Hand-carved in wax, lost-wax cast, each Quilt Shield is one of a kind

Inspired by archives of quilts made by generations of women who hand stitched quilts to tell stories, and make meaning from their hardships

The first in a series of projects inspired by the rich history of women led craft.

This one is for all my quilting friends! For my grandma and my aunt that came before me as quilters. I hope one day to follow in their footsteps and make a quilt of my own

What craft should I do an ode to next?

Images from @folklingโ€™s feed! If youโ€™ve been wanting a vintage quilt, I canโ€™t recommend their collection highly enough! ๐Ÿโœจ

It doesnโ€™t have to be the best thing youโ€™ve ever made. It doesnโ€™t have to be good enough for anyone else.

Donโ€™t let your fear of perfection hold you back. YOU made it, your beautiful hands, your beautiful mind, you.

That is the entire point.

Create & share freely, my friends. Do it for you and for those that truly see and love you! Everything else is a bonus.

I firmly believe this, and I also believe that with enough hours and dedication to any craft- you will get better.

But the real magic lies in simply participating in your own creativity

Savoring every moment of this transitional period to my favorite time of the year ๐Ÿ

I tend to crave the darkness. I get overstimulated in the summer, though swimming in a river is when Iโ€™m happiest- I crave the fog, the quiet, the slow crafts and gathering with a small group of safe people over soup & fresh bread & scary movies

Still, I find myself looking back at the memories and the lessons that this summer brought- all while trying to soak up every ounce of sunshine I can get. The Winters are long here. This is the time of year when I harvest all the connection & insights, storing them away for the dark, cold nights of Winter. Remembering that things might get a little lonely, but there are also so many lessons in this time of year.

Hereโ€™s to remembering that we are never truly alone, connection is only a phone call away. The light will come back, weโ€™ll bask on sun soaked river rocks again- but now it is time for rest. Itโ€™s time to slow down, time to dream up what weโ€™ll create next & drop deep into the lessons of the darkness

I love yโ€™all! Happy Autumn, dear friends! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿฟ๏ธ by @snakeriver___

Itโ€™s hard to even put into words the magical container of creativity that held us during our residency at @souwester โ€” mirrored and made more potent by the two of us co-creating & dreaming & making.

The week was fueled by stardust & constellations. We spoke of comets and kettle steam milky ways. We stayed up into the early hours of the morning sketching and chatting as we followed Pinterest rabbit holes of cosmic portals, Hilma af Klint and Agnes Martin, drifting into a creative flow, that felt like an altered state of mind.

So many magical moments aligned during our stay. On an evening beach walk with @rei_koco , we stood along the shoreline and watched thousands upon thousands of birds follow swirling flight patterns and skim across the waves. How lucky to be able to witness their migration south for Winter!

We feel so incredibly grateful for the magic of this trip, the container that souโ€™wester held for us and the potency energy that was made possible by two creative bodies coming together to make work with deep intention, side by side.

We wrapped up our last evening by gazing into the night sky and were greeted by shooting stars. A magical end to a magical retreat. Who knew that we had been under the Perseids meteor shower the whole time!

No wonder we had inexplicably felt so inspired by space & stardust & all things celestial.

This taught us so much about the power of co-creating & making intentional space to step away from our busy lives. To create art without distractions, expectations or the noise we so easily get caught up in ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿฆข๐ŸŒŒ๐Ÿชž๐ŸŒ€ taken in Oregon by @snakeriver___

๐Ÿ ๐Ÿชก Quilt Inspired Shields are live! ๐Ÿงถ๐ŸŒŸ

Scroll through to read the inspiration, history and lore behind these symbols

Each is hand carved from a block of wax and etched with the tiniest details

Each one of a kind, countless hours go into each collection of these

Coffin Star

A miniature take on the coffin star, this pattern ( a personal favorite) was made to mimic the elongated diamond share of the Delphinus constellation- a dolphin sent as a gift from Poseidon to Amphitrite to swoon her & win her love

With a history in story telling using the night sky- this pattern was often seen on mourning quilts made with deep calico, purples and grays- utlitizing the deceased loved oneโ€™s clothes pieced together to process grief

Out of suffering (the coffin) โšฐ๏ธ something beautiful and heavenly (the star) is created ๐ŸŒŸ

Appliqueฬ Wheat & Star

Also used in mourning jewelry

Images of wheat symbolize a long, fulfilling life & the harvest

Sawtooth Star

The most classic of quilting motifs & one of the oldest dating back to the earlier 18th century. Named sawtooth after its resemblance to a carpenters saw

Also called Morning Star or North Star- this design was meant to symbolize resilience & protection. Historically it was used in quilts during the Civil War to direct enslaved people to follow the North Star towards freedom

Six Point Star

A variation of the Sawtooth star, this pattern also dates back as early as the 1700s

Schoolhouse

First emerging around 1890, following house and church quilt blocks- these patterns represented gathering in community. Teaching was one of the few professions available to women & these schoolhouse patterns represented their contribution to society, though we all know just how much deeper these offerings run. Women are the foundation, femmes are everything. This whole collection truly is an ode to the rich history of women gathering and creating since the dawn of time

Dresden Flower

Named for the floral ornate porcelain plates that came from Dresden, Germany- this pattern originated in the late 19th century

Appliqueฬ flower

Inspired by an 1860โ€™s floral appliqueฬ quilt top from the collection of @folkling based in Gordonsville, taken in Portland, Oregon by @snakeriver___
