Daily swimmer Marianne Bonnay is a remarkable woman. The geologist and mother of six lost her husband to the sea and almost inconceivably then found salvation in the ocean.
I’m grateful to Marianne for allowing me to interview and photograph her for a feature story @goodweekendmag in @sydneymorningherald this weekend.
Marianne’s decision to share her journey was led by a hope to help others, which speaks volumes of her generous character.
Her ocean ritual will no doubt resonate for those whose wellbeing and outlook is anchored by water.

Congratulations to PENELOPE GREEN, who was announced tonight as the winner of the inaugural National Emerging Art Prize for Photography for her work ‘Gil and the Moon’.

Penelope receives a $10,000 acquisitive cash prize with the generous support of NEAP’s major sponsor, Morgans Financial Limited, as well as a solo exhibition at The Garden Gallery (presented by Michael Reid Northern Beaches), professional mentoring and a suite of other prizes.

“This image captures my friend Gill, an artist and fellow swimmer, on a walk at Newcastle Ocean Baths,” says Penelope, whose prize-winning work will enter the Morgans Financial Art Collection. “The image has the historic and elegant feel of black-and-white film portraits taken at places like Bondi Beach in years past, but in this case, the subject is not in swimmers, and the sea is obscured. The viewer is invited to decipher what the subject’s mood is – to some, it may appear she’s in a moment of anguish, hands raised in a sign of struggle with the universe.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us for tonight’s NEAP celebration at The Garden Gallery in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden, where the 2025 finalists exhibition is continuing until next Thursday, 6 November.

Founded in 2021 with the support of Morgans Financial and curated by Amber Creswell Bell, the National Emerging Art Prize provides a highly visible national platform to identify, promote and support Australia’s most promising emerging artists.

Big weather has hit which means the Baths beckon. Always a handy backup and always theatre thanks to the Smackerels and Roughies (mostly) throwing caution to the wind. Hoping a calm and clear open water swim like this one is around the corner.

During the festival of joy and creative goodness that is @newannual I was lucky to attend a workshop by super talents @thedamienfrost and @edwinajillrichards on portraiture, with @benjaminfrasermckenzie as our patient, sparkling muse. Mistakes were made, fun was had - so much to learn 🧐 - and it was awesome to hear snippets of how Damien’s @nightflowersbook project began and evolved, and how Ed works her inimitable magic in different settings, amid general banter on lighting and life.
Thanks Damien and Ed, and to @everett_creative for the momentum to get there in a chaotic week.

Not surprising to see tears shed in the audience this morning watching the incredibly beautiful performance by @catapult_dance at the Canoe Pool, where Cavitation: Breathing Ocean by @izabelapluta__studio has also bewitched bystanders, swimmers and art enthusiasts. We are so darn lucky to have @newannual festival and the creative artists we do in Newy ❤️💙

Flashback to a week ago when I visited @dipunderwaterstudio created by the gorgeous soul @hilda_bezuidenhout and met fellow saltwater shooters @littlekitephotography @eyes.betweenlines @sunshinesurfsessions for a Submerge course.

After three months off the tools in winter, it was so good to refresh the memory with the nuances of snapping underwater, and remember how much I love this creative space.

I’ve now opened my books for very limited underwater portrait commissions this summer - so if you’re curious, DM me quick smart to book in a session.

Thank you Hilda for your knowledge and patience and to the divine @k8tiejayne and @kylarenes for being our indefatigable mermaid models.

If you’re not beachside in Newy this weekend, where even are you?

@newannual kicks off tonight and runs until Sunday, October 4, the epicentre being SOAK at Newcastle Ocean Baths.

So stoked to have been invited to participate with this little outdoor exhibition, which feels extra special because it features a few of my swim crew, the Seahorses, in images made in the seas opposite this outdoor show.

Thank you to dynamic duo @tory.loudon and @sal.hill and @edwinajillrichards for your magic and support and to the creative juggernaut that is @newannual for supporting artists and bringing so much spark and joy to Newy.
