RHIZOMATIC REWIND

I was super excited to be able to run my techstiles workshop series for the FIRST TIME!!! It was great to meet so many new faces and even have some repeat customers. Rhizomatic is such a beautiful place to run these workshops and I was so impressed with all the outcomes!!

🧤👾🪡🧶🔑

Coincided with this was the incredible RAW EDGE FEST where I was able to share a lovely conversation with @nicci.james. Huge thanks to @rochefort_chloe for facilitating. To add to the busiest week of my life was the gorgeous launch of the 3rd edition of @needle_bound by the genius @dazy_chains.

🐑📚🎙️🪢👏🏻

I am INFINITELY grateful and in awe of @meryls.world and all the hard work she puts in EVERYDAY to build @rhizomatic.ldn

🔨👑🪄✨💃🏻

Thank you to everyone who met me at a very rhizomatic time in my life

Join us in bringing fun and connections into e-textiles by creating pair of gloves with ‘half a circuit’ of LEDs.

Join us for an afternoon of “Wired connections”, where we will have some hands-on fun with electronic connections in e-textiles. Each person at the workshop will create a pair of gloves with ‘half a circuit’ of LEDs and decorations on each glove. The circuit will only be completed when two of the gloves are touched together, either by the wearer alone or by forming a circle with the group. The workshop will demonstrate the basics of e-textiles and allow for a lot of relaxed creativity. We will provide all necessary materials and components, as well as offer suggestions for future projects.

Everyone is welcome!

The workshop will be run by Sophie Nadel (@snart.98 sophienadel.com), a creative technologist who aims to break down barriers to tech by encouraging fun and exploration. #thingstodoinlondon #londonevents #londonworkshop #creativetechnology #eastlondon taken in Hackney Wick, London by @snart.98

Come and join us at @rhizomatic.ldn Raw Edge Fest on Tuesday at 7pm for a special panel talk with @nicci.james and @snart.98 about knitting practices.

Most of us are familiar with knitting as a craft, and knitted garments surround us everywhere we go. Behind this popular and worldwide practice, there are many socio-economical, technological and community stakes. Historically, the manufacturing of textiles and yarn has supported the livelihood of entire communities and even political movements.

How is craft heritage preserved and how does it resist current societal shifts in the age of globalisation, capitalism and tech domination?

Tickets available in bio!

Hope to see you there by @snart.98

✨ WIRED CONNECTIONS ✨
(Dutch below)

Grab a needle, thread, and gloves: on 26/09 we're getting hands-on with e-textiles 🧤💡

Join artist Sophie Nadel @snart.98 for an afternoon workshop making LED gloves, each holding "half a circuit." Touch two gloves together and the magic happens: clasp your own hands, or form a circle with the group to complete the circuit ⚡🔌

Expect embroidery, conductive thread, a bit of electronics theory, and lots of relaxed creativity. No experience needed, we provide everything.

🗓️ 26 September
🕑 14:00–17:00
📍 BlaBlaLab

Sophie's practice blends textiles, tech, and craft, slowing technology down and making it tactile, stitch by stitch.

Made possible with support from @cultuur_eindhoven 🙏

Book a free ticket to attend this workshop led by designer and creative technologist Sophie Nadel on Saturday 19 September at Perfect Lives.

You’ll be shown how to translate information into code and embroider it onto a personal item, using traditional textile practice to interrogate technology’s growing presence in our lives.

The workshop is part of the public programme for Softwear, an exhibition curated by Kira Wainstein that brings together work by six contemporary artists to explore the intersecting histories of textiles and computation.

The exhibition runs 18 September – 17 October at No Show Space and is an apexart International Open Call Winner.

Tickets for the workshop can be booked via the link in bio @kirawainstein

Photos from my Encrypted Embroidery workshop hosted by the fabulous @phreaking_collective.

Do you have an address important to you? A password or secret phrase? Translate it into a hidden code and embroider it on your belongings to keep it with you, but out of reach of prying eyes that aim to hold all your data.

Encrypted Embroidery is a design system supported by the Data Reclamation Handbook and available to try out via the link in my bio.

In an increasingly all-encompassing technology environment, the practice of encrypting information in embroidery encourages users to store their information offline. Not only does embroidery allow for slow, meditative creative practice, it re-centres a craft historically dismissed as ‘women’s work’.

Photo credits to the lovely @phreaking_collective - thanks for having me! If you wish to host this workshop as part of an event please feel free to reach out. by @snart.98

I’m so grateful for all the love on @phreaking_collective post about my Encrypted Embroidery workshop!!!

The workshop is inspired by a zine I made after reading @yanis.varoufakis book on technofeudalism and the dangers of being a data serf to exponentially extractive tech conglomerates.

This lead to me making a publication ‘The Data Reclamation Handbook’. Inspired by my past forays into tech-forward textile work. The piece will take you through some history and examples of textile encryption as well as an activity based on my bespoke hidden cross stitch alphabet. Generate your own encrypted messages through the link in my bio!

This edition of the handbook was supported by @domesticity_brussels and printed on the riso machine at @canape.bx Huge thanks to @milan.gillard for his expertise and patience.

I have a very limited number of the zines available but if you want one please feel free to reach out! If there is enough demand I can look into a reprint!
