Reaching out to all my lovely colleagues and art historians for advice. With permission of my client I am allowed to share these images.

I have been treating this painting over the past few months. It came into my studio as an overrestored flower piece indicating lots of thick goopy overpaint and a very strange synthetic yellow varnish which had already started to crosslink badly. I very slowly reduced layers of varnish and poor quality restorations over many weeks until I realised there was another painting underneath.
Infrared reflectography revealed a beautiful portrait of a young lady sitting on a chair. It seems to be of much better quality than the flower composition.

Now here is the dilemma. How do I proceed? The later composition is part of the history of the artwork and I feel it is wrong to remove everything to reveal the portrait. The oil paint is also extremely tough and I am not certain that the paint underneath may not be affected.

Who could help me find out more about the painting? Who is an expert in late 19th century portraiture? Why was this pretty woman erased?

When at Petworth House last week to assess a painting I had the great opportunity and pleasure to discover Felicity Aylieff’s “Expressions in Blue”. It was so lovely to see a contemporary exhibition with the permanent collection in the background. And in the first photo I realised that I captured one of the first paintings I restored shortly after arriving in the UK a long time ago!
Beautiful monumental floral vessels are scattered everywhere until the end of September. Just brilliant!

We went to an open air exhibition at the Brighton Seafront on Sunday “ Secrets beneath the Sea”, a collaboration of @sussexwildlifetrust , @locateproductions and @wayforwardbrighton .
A stunning nature photography display revealing the hidden marine world close to the shores of the Sussex Coast.
Even our teenagers loved it!! Now I want to spot dolphins and humpback whales.

„Through the looking glass“ - I was so happy to welcome our wonderful colleague and great friends from the @nationaltrust , @ntconservationstudio and National Portrait Gallery @beccahellen72 @sarah_maisey1978, Anna Vesaluoma and @jona_mecani with her gorgeous girls to our current studio set up at the V&A East Storehouse to show them the Ajanta Cave project.
It is such an incredible space to work in and such a cool area surrounding the site along the canal where we were able to find a really nice restaurant to socialise afterwards. @samhodgeart it was brilliant that you could join us.

Glowing with @johnmoorestudio , @declanreddo and @nicodetransilvania at the Royal Pavilion last night experiencing an immersive evening of art, music and live performances.

Fabulous looking people everywhere, wandering around the historic building where unexpected performances came alive.

It was a striking moment to see the huge tapestry by @stanleydonwood and @thomyorke hanging in the music room knowing the small painted version. And there were so many other artworks scattered around and live portraiture happening in the kitchen.

I did not take enough photos, too busy bumping into people.
Thank you so much for a memorable evening Paulina and Pascal @theadelaidesalon . An exciting new collaboration with the @brighton_museums trust.

✹ NEW ACQUISITION ✹

We are delighted to announce the acquisition of ‘Barn and Road’ (also known as Litlington Church and Farm) (1912) by Helen Saunders (1885-1963), gifted to @pallanthousegallery by Brigid Peppin.

Painted before Saunders became one of the two official women members of the Vorticist group in 1914–15, this early work offers a fascinating insight into the development of one of Britain’s pioneering modern artists.

Depicting the church of St Michael the Archangel and neighbouring farm in the East Sussex village of Litlington (see 2nd pic) the painting reveals Saunders experimenting with structure, form and a new way of seeing the landscape.

Influenced by Paul Cezanne’s exploration of the underlying geometry of place, Saunders reduces barn, road and church into angular planes, moving beyond traditional landscape painting towards something distinctly modern.

Roger Fry selected this painting for the Grafton Group’s first exhibition in March 1913, alongside Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, Wyndham Lewis, Frederick Etchells, William Roberts and Edward Wandsworth, amongst others.

We are especially grateful to art historian Brigid Peppin, a relative of Helen Saunders, for this generous gift and for helping to ensure this important work can be shared with audiences for generations to come.

Saunders was one of the key artists in our 2019 exhibition ‘Radical Women: Jessica Dismorr and her Contemporaries’ which brought Dismorr, Saunders and fellow artists to the attention of audiences today and is wonderful to now represent her in the permanent collection.

It has been conserved thanks to the support of generous patrons of the Gallery.

You can see this work in our exhibition ‘British Landscapes: A Sense of Place’, opening this Saturday 30 May and it is included in the accompanying book.

We started work on the Ajanta cave painting at the end of April. It is going to be the centrepiece of the South Asia gallery at V&A South Kensington, which opens in 2028. So far, we have removed thick layers of dirt in 2 stages, which has already led to a huge visual improvement. We are carefully reducing old discoloured retouchings after testing many different solvent solutions and gels. By this, we are slowly revealing the delicate details of the original composition.

Visitors to V&A East Storehouse will be able to spot us working on the painting from the Weston Collections hall. It is a very complex project, not only because of its size. But there are many structural and aesthetic elements we need to tackle.

New stomping ground for the next few months
, and a slightly bigger space to work in. Terrifying and exciting in equal measures - also being a part time Londoner again. The area around the V&A East Storehouse and V&A East Museum is such a revelation. Popping down to the canal, taking trains through new areas of development - Wow! I am speechless. I lived in this city for almost 20 years. I am discovering a new side to this global capital. And funny enough this particular part reminds me very much of East Berlin with all its cool places.
Spot my wonderful colleague Radek Chocha who has agreed to help me with the project. 2 more conservators will join us next week! It’s a huge project and without help I would never sleep again
..visitors are very welcome to watch us! Come and see what we are doing!
