Some of our eagle-eyed followers may remember that BBC South Today visited us earlier this year, when the Amberley Panels set off from the Bishop’s Palace at @chicathedral to the Hamilton Kerr Institute in Cambridge.

If you’d like to find out more about the two-year conservation project behind these remarkable Tudor panel paintings, tune in to BBC South Today at 6.30pm today (Monday 13 April) for a closer look at the panels and the work under way to conserve them.

We love working with conservator Sophie Reddington to demystify the process of preparing work for an exhibition. Here she is in our open conservation studio working on the upcoming ‘Comrades in Art: Artists Against Fascism’ exhibition (opens in May)

It's been great to have art conservator Sophie Reddington working on several paintings by Cliff Rowe in Studio 1. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to see Sophie at work, she'll be back tomorrow to put the finishing touches on these pieces before their display in our upcoming exhibition, Comrades in Art (7 May to 18 October). Tomorrow, visitors of the gallery are welcome to watch the live feed of the work from the cafe.

Comrades in Art will highlight the life and work of 11 members of the founding generation of the Artists International Association (AIA), one of whom is Cliff Rowe.

The AIA was established in 1933 to unify artists against fascism and war, rallying comrades across Europe during the Spanish Civil War and efforts to overcome the rise of fascist General Francisco Franco. The artists involved worked across a range of styles, and the Association also focused on wider access to art, through affordable lithograph prints and mural commissions.

This exhibition will be the third collaboration between Andy Friend and Towner, it follows the success of the exhibitions and publications Ravilious & Co: The Pattern of Friendship (2017-2018) and John Nash: the Landscape of Love and Solace (2021).

Cliff Rowe, Women Silkscreen Workers, post-war.

We're hosting a special conservation event this Thursday 26 February, where visitors can enjoy an exclusive preview of paintings by Cliff Rowe before their display in Comrades in Art and learn about the ‘behind the scenes’ conservation work that goes into preparing works of art for exhibition.

You’ll hear from one of the exhibition curators, Karen Taylor, who will introduce you to Cliff Rowe, a founding member of the Artists’ International Association, while Sophie Reddington, an independent paintings conservator, treats the works on loan from the People’s History Museum.

Taking place live in Studio 1, conservator Sophie Reddington will be conserving the works over two days (Thursday 26 and Friday 27), during which you’ll have the opportunity to observe her techniques up close.

We said a temporary goodbye to the Amberley Panels earlier this week, as they were transported from their home of more than a decade at the Bishop’s Palace, @chicathedral, to the Hamilton Kerr Institute (part of @fitzmuseum_uk at @cambridgeuniversity) for two years of vital conservation work.

The move was overseen by paintings conservator Sophie Reddington (@so.reddo) who carefully checked and stabilised each panel before a specialist team packed them into bespoke cases made especially for the 130-mile journey to Cambridge.

Want to know more about the project to conserve these extremely rare examples of Tudor art? Tune into BBC South Today later today (19 February) for more 👀

Now open: The Sussex Modernism exhibition at @townergallery —perfect for a visit this weekend or anytime over the summer.

Sussex is revealed as a place always in flux. The idea of dissident retreat is explored through the work of Virginia Woolf, Marion Milner, and Grace Pailthorpe; dreamy seascapes by David Jones; and marine visions by Edith Rimmington, Edward Wadsworth, and Gluck. Contemporary sculptural installations by Becky Beasley add a modern dimension. The exhibition also ventures into urban streets, seedy bars, and rubbish dumps—territory frequented by the countercultural art of Jeff Keen, Arnold Daghani, and Edward Burra.

In preparation for the show, conservator Sophie Reddington - @so.reddo - visited Towner to breathe new life into an impressive piece by Ivon Hitchens—on loan from @sussexuni which offers a taste of what to expect from Sussex Modernism, curated by Dr. Hope Wolf - @_hope_wolf

Visiting from out of town? Extend your stay and explore Eastbourne and the surrounding area by booking a night or two at the Port Hotel. Just a short walk from Towner Eastbourne, the hotel offers sea views and a beautifully restored boutique experience. Port Hotel features stylish guest rooms, a bar, a restaurant, and a stunning outdoor terrace. Check @stayatport and explore the link in their bio for further information.
