Pulsing Sound 2026–27 Season Opener
Permutations: A Piano Extravaganza

Pianists Lucas Amory @lucasmusicks and Max Hammond @maxhammondpiano join forces with the Steinway Spirio for an evening of 20th- and 21st-century piano music, featuring works by Ravel, Nancarrow, John Adams, Sofia Ouyang, Miles Walter, and Lucas Amory—across four hands, two pianos, new arrangements, and premieres.

Pulsing Sound is THE BLANC’s cross-disciplinary concert series, curated by @sofia_ouyang and conceived as a platform for music, experimentation, and interdisciplinary exchange. “Pulsing” speaks to sound in continuous motion—passing between bodies, instruments, spaces, and artistic forms, changing and gathering new possibilities as it moves.

Following its inaugural season, Pulsing Sound returns with six new programs. Permutations opens the new season.

“Fire and Ice” for piano four hands, inspired by Robert Frost’s poem of the same title, is having its US premiere this Saturday at @theblanc_ny by @lucasmusicks and @maxhammondpiano , along with some lovely 20th and 21st century piano four hand music.

Program Note for “幽音 You Yin”——Sofia Jen Ouyang

This piece is titled You Yin (幽音), from two Chinese words: yin (音), meaning sound or tone, and you (幽), which evokes something hidden, distant, or dimly perceptible. The piece centers on this notion of you: something that is not fully present or immediately visible, yet leaves traces of its presence behind.
The music begins in the lowest register of the guzheng, as though something were buried beneath the surface of these deep, resonant sounds. From this obscured space, the music gradually blossoms.

This work will be premiered on October 4 at 5:00 PM at The Blanc in New York City. We warmly invite everyone who is interested to join us and celebrate with Sofia the premiere of this highly anticipated new work. by @sofia_ouyang

Excited to share “Antuni, Voiced” (2025) for clarinet and fixed media, commissioned and premiered by @anoushpogo as part of her project Komitas and Friends: Armenian Folk Music.

The piece was inspired by, and written in dialogue with, the Armenian folk song “Antuni.” Below is Anoush’s English translation:

My heart is like the ruinated homes Broken logs thrown asunder
Wild birds will nest in our ruins
Let me throw myself into the rivers and be food for the children of the fish (Oh, look at the horrid weather)
Look at the black sea, covered in white waves
That goes around us and does not mix
My heart, without a home, is bewildered and melancholic Oh, what of my darkened heart
(Oh, look at the horrid weather)

So much fun stepping slightly outside my usual habitat and spending the past month in an intensive rehearsal process with the Inter Alia theatre team in Shanghai and Beijing as composer.

The Chinese production of Suzie Miller’s Inter Alia premiered last night at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, starring Yao Chen姚晨, Bao Jianfeng保剑锋, and Guo Ziming郭紫铭, and directed by Zhou Ke周可.

Special thanks to @thomas.a.giles and @chris_fredd for bringing the score to life, @ychill21 for the recording, and Tim Wu for the mixing and mastering taken in 国家大剧院National Centre for the Performing Arts by @sofia_ouyang
