✨Guanyin of Nanshan✨ on film 🎞

Standing at 108 meters (an auspicious number in Buddhist religion), the Guanyin of Nanshan is Sanya’s most gracious statue.

The sculpture depicts three sides of the Guanyin goddess. The one facing inland (pictured above) holds Buddhist scrolls. The other two sides face the South China Sea as a symbol of blessings and protection to “not only China, but the whole world”.

When do you feel the most alive? 💭

For me, it’s when I’m out exploring new parts of the world and connecting with people in the languages they speak.

I’ll never forget the time I spoke four languages in a van full of tourists on the way to the Great Wall. In the van were 2 French, 2 Portuguese, 2 Chinese and 1 Brazilian American (me 🙋🏻‍♀️).

I distinctly remember the Portuguese couple struggling to communicate with the tour guide upon arrival. Having overheard their conversation, I swiftly jumped to their aid using the Chinese I could speak at the time. It may sound silly, but using my languages to help people in small ways like these bring me the most joy.

The photo above is from my trip to Sanya, where I enjoyed many more moments of speaking Mandarin 💜 If I close my eyes I can almost feel the ocean breeze 🌊

Have you ever taken a leap of faith?

One that made your heart beat at a thousand miles per hour? One that left you constantly questioning yourself to your wit’s end?

See that girl sitting on the edge of the harbor? That was me 5 years ago. I took a leap of faith to study, live and work in France for a year, fully embracing my intuition and my heart’s desire. A roaring fire burned within me as I set out on my mission to push my French to new heights, knowing fully well that it would be both a daunting and humbling experience. But I charged forward anyway. Nothing could stop me. And in the end, despite the discomfort, confusion and struggle, it was all so, so worth it.

This photo was taken just a month into this European chapter of my life, during a weekend excursion to Lisbon. I had no idea what the future would hold for me, but what I did know was that I would not be leaving Europe until I reached fluency in French. Funny how from this standpoint I can almost see my life unfold in front of me like a movie 🎥 *grabs popcorn* 🍿

The most enriching and memorable moments come from times we’ve stepped out of our comfort zones, times we’ve placed unconditional love and trust in ourselves to take that leap of faith. If you’re looking for a sign to finally push yourself in some way or another, I hope that this can be it. You are more capable than you think 💜

@katya_shutko and I went to a Chinese teahouse 🫖 for the first time, and we had such a blast!

For my fellow Mandarin learners, I made sure to include Pinyin in the subtitles just in case it helps 🥰

Do you ever get tired of the same old language learning routine? 😮‍💨 Or has it been a while since you last practiced a foreign language?

Here are 3 FUN things you can do to keep things interesting (I’ve done all of these):

➡️ Name objects in your head as you look around you 💭

Start simple. “Coffee mug, placemat, stovetop”. Then slowly move on to more complex thoughts! This will train you to think in your TL.

➡️ Learn a new skill IN the language your learning 💃🏻🎨

I cannot stress this one enough!!!! Whether it’s a salsa class in Spanish, cooking class in Italian, or even just online yoga in Mandarin, it will take you SO far 🤩

And no, you don’t have to be “ready” for it. You’ll be surprised how far you can go if there’s a fire under your butt 🔥

➡️ Talk or read to a translation app 🗣

Most translation apps have a speech to text option that you can easily use. This will put your pronunciation to the test!

I actually did this in Mandarin with 小王子 (The Little Prince) and omg it was a hilarious disaster at first 😂 but it really trains you well!

Come to this UNESCO site and perhaps you’ll find yourself amidst a sea of clouds stretching out for miles and miles on end ☁️🏔☁️

Thanks to the constant movement of clouds funneling through the valleys and over the mountain peaks, it is a continually changing vista, which makes every moment at Huangshan a truly unique experience 💜

Weather patterns here are pretty erratic as well. My friend and I got caught in a thunderstorm on our way up, yet somehow it cleared up for a brief moment in the afternoon before raining again 🤷🏻‍♀️

There’s more to the Huangshan than good looks, though. The history of China’s loveliest mountain is shrouded in mysticism and folklore. One 8th century Tang Dynasty legend even claimed that the mountain contained the elixir of immortality 🍶 but I guess the next best thing is bubble tea 🧋😋

PS — The Yellow Mountains are not called so because the mountains are yellow, but because the area was renamed after the legendary Yellow Emperor (Huang Di) in 747 AD.

Shiyo 西柚～ 💕 speaks 4 languages.

She spent her childhood in Japan where she would speak Japanese at school and Mandarin with her Chinese parents. She later moved to Lyon, France for uni and lived there for EIGHT. WHOLE. YEARS!

She quickly fell in love with the lifestyle (who wouldn’t?!) and wanted to share her knowledge with businessmen and women in China. Nowadays, you’ll find her running around different parts of China, managing her etiquette business like a total lady boss.

She is one of the most graceful and humble beings I’ve met here in Shanghai! Also love the fact that we can talk for hours about anything French-related 🇫🇷🤪
