Join us for an artist talk with Sofie Mart and Enrico Viola at the Machine Arts Kiosk on the Sep 26 at 7pm ✦

At the Machine Arts Kiosk exhibition, Sofie and Enrico will present their project Resonance.

Resonance is a real-time machine drawing performance in which a plotter translates the sound of a playing record into a drawing produced directly on its label. The system synchronises several temporal layers at once: the rhythm and dynamics of the music, the movement of the drawing machine, the accumulation of marks, and the continuous rotation of the record itself. Rather than treating the plotter as a standalone tool, the work combines it with the turntable as a second mechanical system, creating a hybrid instrument whose behaviour emerges from their interaction. Each drawing is generated live and remains specific to the record, the music, and the duration of the performance. Designed as a site-specific public interaction, Resonance invites visitors to select a record, play it, and leave with a machine-drawn label produced in response to that moment.

For Art Basel in collaboration with William Mapan, we’re preparing a special project where a robotic system continuously performs Dances On Shadows (DOS) as live drawings.

William’s practice moves between code and traditional painting. Over the past months, we’ve been working on translating this process into an autonomous system that interprets composition and engages with material in a new way. Rather than replicating digital works, it reactivates them, so each drawing becomes a theatre for light, shadows and colors.

DOS live drawings will be presented at @artblocks_io booth, Zero 10 sector of @artbasel, June 16–21, 2026. by @sofiem.art

Patrick Tresset is a French artist known for his performative robotic drawing installations. Since 2009, he has built machines that act as characters in performances about human presence, absence, attention, and boredom. The sitter, the robot, and the audience become part of a shared encounter where stillness and gesture meet. Today he works with embodied AI agents as actors that tell visual stories about us. Through the act of drawing, these systems develop their own way of seeing, one that emerges from how they’ve learned about our culture.

Sofie Mart interviews Patrick about his practice, the role of performance and embodiment, and what happens when machines learn to see and draw.

A few examples of stylized cartographic drawings generated from aerial images 🗺️

In my work with restor.eco, I’m using their semantic segmentation model that detects tree canopy, @meta Segment Anything model that detects boundaries, and additional visual markers to find ‘special’ trees — like the ones in this example, deciduous vs evergreen 🌲🌳

In a meantime, its been fun to practice my semantic-semiotic workflow, a way to assign different types of marks based on the semantics of the image / region.

Shall we look for a Christmas tree? 🎄

Machine visions performed live ✨

For this installation, with the artifacts from @ethzurich image archive as subjects, I let my robotic machine to learn and develop a machine-native visual language in its way of drawing.

Image-interpretation techniques were shown as a part of “Expressive Machines” exhibition, curated by @machineartsgroup at AI+X Summit / @eth_ai_center on 02.10.2025 ✨

This exhibition explores how AI and robotics move beyond image generation into the realm of physical expression. Highlights from the Machine Arts Group inaugural event on the 29.08.2025 ✨

We had an amazing night with many curious people, a special guest @baguspandega, painting machines in live action, and a sneak peek at what’s ahead for the Machine Arts Group.

The Machine Arts Group (MAG) is a newly founded initiative in Zurich kick-started by computational designer and artist Armin Aschenbrenner @armin.aschenbrenner and creative technologist and art producer Sofie Mart @sofiem.art

MAG is dedicated to exploring new forms of human–machine collaboration in physical art-making.

In June, I spent a week live-drawing at Digital Art Mile in Basel, during the vibrant Art Basel week.

I presented my new custom drawing machine used for the first time in this setting, as part of a special project with @katevassgalerie and @__osinachi, whose work inspired this exploration of bodily form through machine gesture.

The machine run continuously over five days, rendering various materials like charcoal, chalk, pencils, and oil pastels to translate digital image into physical form.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by Space25 @artmetaofficial, asked questions, or simply paused to watch.
