What does it mean to wear your ā€œbestā€? šŸ§„āœØšŸ‘ šŸ‘”šŸ‘ž
Opening this week at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Sunday Best: The Power & The Glory of Black Style trace decades of style, rebellion, and self-determination.
Curated by Dr. Julie Crooks and Dr. Jason Cyrus, this world-debut exhibition moves through fashion, visual art, and media from the 1880s to today.

I experienced the exhibition yesterday, a preview, along with some stakeholders and contributors, who spoke of their intents and gratitude for being a participant of the dynamic production that has a captivating history behind the global Black diaspora’s incredible dressing rituals.
šŸ¤—I met NewYorker Melodie McDaniel @melodiemcdaniel whose photographs were included in this exhibition, and we clicked. Her church photos were taken in Harlem…Patrick Kelly’s designs were in the mix. Pioneering fashion journalist, author and creative director Andre Leon Talley, who had a larger-than-life personality, was paid tribute to in an eye-catching caftan, beautifully illustrated.
It’s worth checking out ā£ļø @agotoronto

šŸ“… Exhibition Schedule:
• AGO Members First Look: Starts Oct 7, 2026
• Annual Passholders: Starts Oct 9, 2026 (5 PM)
• Public Opening: Oct 13, 2026 (Free with General Admission)

From the courtroom to the pulpit, Prophetess Victoria Althea Mitchell delivered a message of redemption that moved worshippers to tears at the Yahweh Ministries’ space in Toronto, last Saturday evening.

I visited the Sept. 19th Redemption Prophetic Experience, where Mitchell joined her husband, Pastor Evard Mitchell, for a night of worship, prayer, preaching and prophetic ministry that centred on a clear promise: You were not overlooked. You were redeemed.

By the sermon’s end, at least one worshipper answered the call to salvation, which wasn’t surprising to me as it was a powerful one. I know Victoria personally and she was in her element! Congregants clapped, swayed and lifted their hands as faith, hope and emotion converged.

Known professionally as Althea Mitchell, the internationally trained lawyer is also an author, entrepreneur, leadership mentor and spiritual leader. Her journey from legal advocacy to prophetic ministry dictated an evening devoted to restoration, freedom and renewed purpose.
Check her out on whenever you can

I never imagined that one day I would have to write Philip Mascoll’s name in the past tense.
Years ago, when I profiled him for the Gleaner, I called him ā€œa giant of a man-literally and figuratively.ā€ Today, even those words feel too small.

His son Dominic told me that about 4:29 PM on Monday, September 14, in Toronto, that giant heart stopped beating.
Philip was 77.
What is more heartbreaking for me was that I texted Dominic at 2:58 PM that same day asking about him to finalize arrangement for a visit.😭

To the world, he was an accomplished journalist who joined the Toronto Star in 1981 and gave more than 27 years to the craft. He was an editor, reporter and fearless truth-seeker. He was also a founding leader of the Jamaican Diaspora Canada Foundation, an advocate, a mentor and a patriot whose love for Jamaica was not softened by distance. He rallied around the People’s National Party (PNP) unapologetically and Black Action Defense Committee(BADC).
But public honours tell only part of a life.
To his three children (Philip Jr., Keisha and Dominic), he was Dad. To his grandchildren, he was simply and lovingly GP. Best believe somewhere inside that small name is the truest measure of this titan: the stories he told them and the laughter they knew that no title, tribute or medal can ever fill.

Philip told me that serving Jamaica and its people was ā€œlike breathing.ā€ He meant it. He spent his life giving Jamaica his voice, his intellect, his courage and his stubborn hope.

With a heavy heart that I never expected to carry, I’m sharing again the article I wrote about him when we celebrated his OD. I wrote those words while he could read them, and am devastated that there will be no new interview, no next call, WhatsApp messages or DMs of funny reels, fierce opinions or his hearty laughter. He always greeted me as Ms. Findlay, which was his style.

Walk good, Sir Phil (my name for him), my friend and fellow journalistā£ļø Though retired, the ink was in your blood.
You spent a lifetime helping to tell other people’s stories and now, through tears, we tell yours. You were truly big ’bout yah, and your absence will be even bigger still.šŸ•ŠļøšŸ¤šŸ™šŸ½šŸ™ŒšŸ¾ taken in Toronto, Ontario by @sofifindlay
