When I started this journey I was burnt out from making music for the commercial industry. I’d gone from writing hundreds of songs a year and living off one or two, to finally getting to make an album as a signed artist that never came out. I’d worked so hard I developed a nerve problem in my hands and arms and had to stop making music altogether, except in short bursts. I got back to just making what I felt connected to, and that became Sound of Fractures. For the first time I wrote something honest about my life — a post that went with my first EP, Real Friends. It was almost like self therapy. That EP was mastered by my close friend @emre_ram , the visualisers made by @jackson_ducasse , managed by my friend Casper. The cover was a photo from my mum’s wall of me as a kid, the press shots above by my best mates cousin @joepuxx . It was my reset. Soon after I met my now wife, took a break from music for the first time in nine years, and started travelling for something other than writing camps. I guess I started to live. The second phase was about discovering who I was as an artist outside of just streaming. I found a circle of people through exploring music as NFTs. It blew my world open. I could combine art forms, release directly to people, let them contribute to the artwork. Everyone I met was sick of streaming and open to something else. That system funded my next EPs, my debut album SCENES, and 350 people contributed their memories to it. £6,000 raised for a project no commercial partner would back because the value was emotional, not financial. Looking back, that period was R&D for what Sound of Fractures has become. A whole world built around participation, co-ownership and meaning making. It freed me from what I thought an electronic music artist had to be. Alone Together is the vehicle for all of it. And it only exists because I had the freedom to open up, speak honestly, and look for ways to bring you into the experience. For a long time, I thought the goal was to build an audience. Release the music. Grow the numbers. Reach more people. Lately, I’ve started wondering if that’s the wrong question. What if the real opportunity for artists isn’t just to create things for people to consume, but to create moments people genuinely want to be part of? That’s been the thinking behind everything I’ve been building over the last few years. SCENES invited people to share memories that became part of an album. When I Was In Love samples a real story shared by a stranger. Alone Together invites people to contribute their own memories, transforming them into unique versions of the music. The live event creates space for strangers to meet through music, conversation and shared reflection. They’re all experiments in the same idea. Not asking, “How do I get more people to listen?” But asking, “How can music become the beginning of something, rather than the end?” I’d love to know what you think. I often get approached by labels with the usual: “we’d love to hear your new demos.” It’s tempting to have experienced help and financial support, but the concept of Sound of Fractures was always about independence. To own everything. That was my challenge, but also my “why.” After years of making music for others and leaving the final say to luck and other people, I wanted freedom. The reality is I still need money to invest, but I was lucky to find a community of people who were looking for more from music. People who wanted to connect more deeply, who wanted to support it in ways that went beyond just streaming. Without those people, I wouldn’t be where I am now, and definitely wouldn’t still be independent. That’s the truth: the music I make can only stay as free as it has with your support. SCENES raised enough to make something unique and participatory that could never have happened through traditional funding. And it showed me what’s possible when people invest not just in music, but in the world around it. For the Alone Together EP, I’ve already been lucky to find one Executive Producer in @cxy , who’s been supporting this next season of music and world building experiments. WILD to hear my song Bubbles sound tracking @dior summer 27 in Paris 🤯 Building worlds instead of chasing streams is a long game, but your ethos and your identity matters, it’s a foundation that people want to co-create and align with. The music is still the seed but there’s so much more you can build around it. Especially now there is so much music out there, I really believe that the meaning that people build in their mind around you as an artist is more important than ever. Wasn’t sure if this was gonna happen, but it’s amazing it came through in the end, and surreal …. This arpeggiator part was always one of my fav things I’ve made so really cool to see it being used like this! This is just one part of new plans to come over the next 3 months. The talk and playback by Holly Herndon was the highlight, how she has balanced music, research and technology .. and being a parent, I’ve found really inspiring over the last 5 years as I build this next phase of my career. one of the things I loved most was the deep dive into the context behind the work, and how she guided us through how each project led to the next, and how they were connected… we don’t get to hear enough context behind the evolution of creative thinking over longer periods of time, instead we just are often limited too the story being a single piece of work or release. I originally posted this pretty much a year to the day… has anything changed or do you think they have dated? I’m finding the discourse around music is getting very repetitive… the change I am seeing is that these kind of takes are becoming normal discourse outside of music circles and people seem to me to be more aware of the issues the systems they use have on the things they love, and their own happiness and wellbeing. So, in spite of all the doomsday takes, I feel like there is a mainstream awakening happening, where people are more aware of what’s social media can bring them and what it can’t. And I hope that leads to people going back to what music always was and should be, a way to connect, to be a part of something, to process your emotions, to speak for you and with you… a process that has emotional value. I’ve asked so many people over the last few months to share their favourite music moments and memories, and by far the vast majority are physical and irl. I think this speaks to how people form bonds with music they see as meaningful, at least the ones outside of a specific song our album that speaks to them as a piece of music… BUT I’m finding that people find these harder and harder to recall, they feel put on the spot, they know it’s there.. it’s just harder to grasp the name and the artist. It’s much easier to pull a physical memory out than one of sonic connection alone… it’s why I’m thinking more about physical space and how we design that to intentionally form bonds and more meaningful moments away from our screens.
