one time someone called me “a creative for hire” (to my face!!) and sometimes when I tell people I’m an artist they laugh (especially if they’ve given in to the condition of being a creative for hire) but all I mean by artist is that I’m compelled to make things in a particular way, that I’m compelled to make w/o promise of recognition or compensation (but #payartists). tbh the thing I want more than to appear on a year end “best of” list is for someone to engage critically with what I’m making. sometimes I feel like this medium — podcast — is not exactly right for what I want to say and how I want to say it, or that it’s not the right medium for whoever my audience might be, or that the things I make just aren’t marketable — idk!! Anyway I really appreciate these words by @laurenpassell & I’m grateful for every bit of attention on this project, thanks to everyone who is listening ❤️🍄🎧 (“We were never meant to be alone!!!!!” is the grand unified theory of this season) by @soft__disaster

**QUEERING AUDIO STORYTELLING, a brief provocation on narrative disobedience** is my first video essay, produced for @contentisqueenhq as part of the International Women’s Podcast Festival Global Voices free live stream starting on Thursday, March 26, 12:00PM GMT (7AM in NYC).

This essay gathers my thoughts from a few months of marinating on how queer aesthetics (especially as seen on film) can guide us towards more unruly audio storytelling in a risk averse podcast landscape.

It’s a little bit
In defense of narrative audio
And a fair amount
F*ck audio gatekeepers
And very much
Have fun
Make cool things
Try that weird idea you had
Be (sonically) ungovernable (lol)

Tune in (drop out)(narratively speaking) to listen to me muse about narrative experimentation, how limitations can become style, how failure is the beginning of processs & not the end.

Scroll through to see the complete #IWPF2026 program! Link to the stream is in my bio. by @soft__disaster

2/ later Jesse Lawson performed a collective ritual about shame & regret, for which we were asked to submit our shame anonymously. the MIRP community is collaborative, generous, supportive - and the shame I felt was about being individualistic, narcissistic - about how often I make generalizations based on my personal (audio) grievances, how much energy I give to focusing on what I don’t want rather than what I do

I felt confronted by my reluctance to trust people in this industry, my reluctance to even look for a sense of community here. It’s a kind of defensive posture…. related to my earliest experiences doing this. Productions that felt exploitative. People who are demeaning. Those experiences were formative, but I realize now they’re not necessarily the norm, or what I have to look forward to. But trying to let go of those feelings hadn’t worked, I needed to metabolize them somehow

members of Jesse’s audience shredded the anonymous shame/guilt/regret papers, making a little pile on the floor. They became part of the next performance by Georgia Walker & Alice Garner. in the weeks before the meeting, people sent in digital audio files to Georgia - to be composted. While we listened to that audio transform from discrete clips into something totally new, the shredded bits of shame were also folded into the soil, also by volunteers from the audience. 1/ two days at @mirpmeeting definitely made me think more deeply, more intentionally, more curiously, about sound, and about the practice of listening. especially collective listening, something which I don’t do a lot of

I applied to MIRP as the narrative podcast bubble was deflating, with more questions than ideas about narrative audio post-podcast. I was thinking about narrative audio albums and magazines & other ways to re-invent an individual listening experience

but then the organizers of MIRP introduced me to Alex & Marco from @collettivopanothi. I learned about their work in Italy — the way they collaborate with & nurture emerging producers, and the interactive, collective listening experiences that they create. we talked about the audio crises in their context and mine, and then we talked about what to do in response to the crisis

we talked about an AUDIO ECOSYSTEM, one that nurtures both creators and listeners. And instead of giving a talk, we decided to host a brainstorm where other people could share their solutions. and everyone shared the different ways they were listening — together taken in Belgium by @soft__disaster
