Soft-firm recently designed and completed a surf temple in Uluwatu Bali, in collaboration with local architect Revan Teggar. Inspired by Javanese vernacular architecture, we created a natural ascension of stacked rooms from sea to sky —from surfing and living, to sleeping and bathing, to a tiny room for hammock and reflection. by @soft__firm

A space at @midtowncjc went underused for almost seven years—so we decided to do something about it. ⬆️

Along with the input of community members who use their services, the Midtown Community Justice Center and the New York State Unified Court System seized an opportunity to expand a shared vision of justice—and transform emergency holding cells from an underutilized space to one that is flexible, functional, and people-centered.

They selected Lexi Tsien and Talitha Liu of @soft__firm to make this vision a reality.

“This project takes people beyond a cell to really think about a network of care, community, and support,” Lexi Tsien explains.

Find out more about the project and how @soft__firm approach it at the link in our bio.

Soft-Firm’s exterior study for the Upstate Khata, exploring additions to a home in a Ukrainian community in Hunter, New York. Simple geometric primitives add volume to the original home, creating new living spaces while preserving the scale and character of the existing structure.

We use patterning and aperture as a tectonic strategy that references Ukrainian vernacular and craft traditions as a way to integrate old and new. Intentional material paneling, seams, and oversized painted graphics create simple geometric patterns that stitch in with the existing home’s painted trims and carved wood details. New four-season indoor and outdoor living spaces support year-round gathering, from summer evenings to après-ski. taken in Hunter, New York by @soft__firm

Soft-Firm is working on the interior renovation of a home in a Ukrainian community in upstate New York. We are introducing strategic contemporary updates while preserving and amplifying original vernacular details. A minimal insertion integrates a multiplicity of functions and supports everyday life: a space for work, a space for repose, and a spiral stair to connect the first and second floors for a growing family. Simple custom millwork with painted details draws from Ukrainian embroidery and vernacular architectural details of the house, recalling Ukrainian khata, the traditional cottages that define the community’s cultural identity. taken in Hunter, New York by @soft__firm

Fort Greene Townhouse - a cellar takes on a grotto-like quality with spaces carved out for a pool, sauna, steamroom, gym, and icebath. A concrete datum registers excavation to the original building and new sectional depth. Viz w @jamielatimer_ taken in Fort Greene by @soft__firm

A manta green flourish at the entryway draws from Ruth Kohler’s autograph, serving as both a visual marker identifiable from the street, and a seasonal coat rack. @ruthfoundationforthearts

Fort Greene Townhouse - Soft-Firm looked to spolia, or architectural artifacts repurposed from ruins, as a methodology for incorporating existing historical details into new construction. This modality allows the project to embrace an incongruous and expansive time scale, referencing materials, textures, and fabrication techniques from antiquity to now. Fort Greene Townhouse - this project unfolds as an archaeological section, striated with atmospherically distinct environments from parlor to basement to cellar. A sculptural plaster stair descends into a cellar grotto for bathing. The handrail is eased into the wall in plan and section, and lit around a curve. The stair transports users to another atmosphere. Viz w @jamielatimer_ by @soft__firm

🍋‍🟩⚡️An electric bookstand has landed at the Ruth Arts Foundation in Milwaukee. We continue to make custom millwork and storage solutions as they settle into their space and provide a resource library for their community. Inspired by lawn chairs and praying mantises, neon green metalwork is softened with the domestic scale of cane webbing. @zak_rose 📸 @ruthfoundationforthearts by @soft__firm

🌀 As we celebrate the year of the Fire Horse we are thinking of collectivity, time as an ever-expanding circle, and architecture’s potential to add seats to the table. Our work for an arts and activism space weaves together the past and current lives of the building as a general store, herbalist, purveyor of roast pork, and a porcelain shop.

This is a project of today, but also one more lap in an ever expanding vision of stewardship, collective memory, and belonging for future generations in Chinatown. Viz w @dnl.chang by @soft__firm
