The upcoming transformation of holding cells at the Midtown Community Justice Center with @nycourts and @soft__firm is the latest stage of a longer evolution of community justice, our CEO Courtney Bryan writes. Having led the Community Justice Center from 2008 to 2013, Courtney maps how the local court’s transformation from traditional to holistic responses for those charged with misdemeanors represents a broader shift in New York City’s justice landscape. A space at @midtowncjc went underused for almost seven years—so we decided to do something about it. ⬆️ Along with the input of community members who use their services, the Midtown Community Justice Center and the New York State Unified Court System seized an opportunity to expand a shared vision of justice—and transform emergency holding cells from an underutilized space to one that is flexible, functional, and people-centered. They selected Lexi Tsien and Talitha Liu of @soft__firm to make this vision a reality. “This project takes people beyond a cell to really think about a network of care, community, and support,” Lexi Tsien explains. Find out more about the project and how @soft__firm approach it at the link in our bio. 📸Photography by Mary Kang Photography (@mary.kang) ✏️ Renderings by Soft-Firm (@soft__firm) 🎨 Graphics by Center for Justice Innovation (@innovatingjustice)

By soft-firm @soft__firm Soft-Firm’s exterior study for the Upstate Khata, exploring additions to a home in a Ukrainian community in Hunter, New York. Simple geometric primitives add volume to the original home, creating new living spaces while preserving the scale and character of the existing structure. We use patterning and aperture as a tectonic strategy that references Ukrainian vernacular and craft traditions as a way to integrate old and new. Intentional material paneling, seams, and oversized painted graphics create simple geometric patterns that stitch in with the existing home’s painted trims and carved wood details. New four-season indoor and outdoor living spaces support year-round gathering, from summer evenings to après-ski. #postdigitalarchitecture #soft__firm

By soft-firm @soft__firm Soft-Firm is working on the interior renovation of a home in a Ukrainian community in upstate New York. We are introducing strategic contemporary updates while preserving and amplifying original vernacular details. A minimal insertion integrates a multiplicity of functions and supports everyday life: a space for work, a space for repose, and a spiral stair to connect the first and second floors for a growing family. Simple custom millwork with painted details draws from Ukrainian embroidery and vernacular architectural details of the house, recalling Ukrainian khata, the traditional cottages that define the community’s cultural identity. #postdigitalarchitecture #soft__firm

What’s the right amount of space for how you want to live? Ultimately, the tiny homes in our Small Spaces issue show that when it comes to configuring small spaces, one size doesn’t fit all, but the possibilities are infinite. Forget the gimmicky hacks you see online: this issue packs in a range of thoughtful homes designed for real life. And they don’t waste an inch. As the year comes to a close, we share a compilation of moments that capture just a fraction of the brilliant ideas, beauty, strength, initiative, tenacity, diligence, inquisitiveness, the SERIOUS JOY that we experienced in 2024. It was a year to think about how the questions of yesterday still inform today, that improvisation and interconnection can guide us towards the worlds we desire, that leaping into the unknown is not a choice but a given. And that we always do this together. We are heartened, inspired, grateful and ready to get to work with you. A profound thank you to our collaborators, our new friends, our old friends, and those who continue to bring their fullness to cultural work.  …and we’re just getting started. With love, Ruth Arts

Last Monday December 09, students presented their final projects for the “Building on Buildings” studio by Wonne Ickx / PRODUCTORA at GSAPP. Working on Governors Island New York, we envisioned architectural interventions as a specific moment of a larger continuum of repetitive transformations. Thanks for the insightful comments of my jury: Clare Newman (Director TGI - Trust Governors Island), Eric Bunge (nArchitects), Martino Stierli (MoMA), Marc Tsurumaki (LTL Architects), Bernard Tschumi (Bernard Tschumi Architects) and Lexi Tsien (Soft Firm)! We invited designers and professors Tal Liu (@taleliu) and Lexi Tsien (@lexitsien), cofounders of @soft__firm, to share about their experience leading a research-based and community-forward architectural practice in New York. Visit our LinkedIn page for the full interview - Link in Bio "As architects and designers we need to humble ourselves to the knowledge of the communities we build with and in. We listen and learn first, understand what the most pressing issues are, and identify opportunities for activation, repair, adaptation, and reuse. We define “public” or “constituent” in partnership with clients, and through that conversation try to shape a response that is sensitive to context. We hope our engagement not only strengthens a community but builds new connections. " - Tal Liu and Lexi Tsien 📷: Mary Kang

Soft-Firm’s (@soft__firm) transformation of a Brooklyn brownstone into layered space for co-living, creative labor and activism got a spotlight in @metropolismag’s profile of the interdisciplinary design practice in the magazine’s Jan/Feb 2023 print issue. The renovation currently supports Soft-Firm co-founder Lexi Tsien, and a group of women of color all engaged in creative labor and community activism. The overall design approach acknowledges the building’s history while facilitating new models for living that are both intersectional and intergenerational. Instead of mimicking the original brownstone, the studio inserted modern contrasts within a shell of selectively preserved historic detail. New interventions and alterations are functional, adaptable, lo-fi, and locally sourced—all designed to shapeshift at pace with the lives of their inhabitants. Tsien tells Michelle Duncan in Metropolis’ profile: “Our ethos [is] using our backgrounds as anthropologists to observe what’s there on the site or how it’s used. We approach a lot of projects with the idea that the site is like a found object. We do a lot of looking at what’s in the area, what are the populations, what are historical pieces that we want to pull out.” Tsien continues, “We’re really interested in the social aspect of how architecture can empower different communities.” Click the link in bio to read more about how Soft-Firm founders Lexi Tsien and Talitha Liu “bring their sociocultural awareness to design projects in Brooklyn and beyond" in Metropolis. 🔗 ✏️ @emmduncan.scribe 📸 Image 1 & 5 by @mary.kang; images 2 - 4 by @mvahrenwald #softfirm #design #architecture #metropolis #newyork #brookyln #generationhouse #architectural #homedesign #renovation #homerenovation #historic #landmark #brownstone #homedecor #architecturalphotography #photography #coliving #activism

Intergenerational living is on the rise as occupants grapple with issues like higher costs of living, inaccessibility to child and elderly care and loneliness. While mixing different age groups under the same roof may help resolve some of these issues, they may also introduce new ones by inadequately meeting different user groups’ needs. Here, we round up four spaces that are exemplary in fostering intergenerational residential environments. Discover all cross-generational residences by visiting the link in bio _ #FRAMERoundup #homedesign #generations #interiordesign
