Not being good at something is hard.

The first few weeks of figure skating felt easy. Muscle memory from lessons as a kid came back and I progressed quickly through basic levels 1-3. But now that I’m 4ish months into my practice, it’s HUMBLING. I’m struggling with edge work (as seen by my botched 3-turn here), and discovering how much tiiiiiime it takes to get better. Getting better means constant repetition, constant failure, and addressing the same notes every time (eyes up!!) while I literally wait for my muscles to develop.

But I’m forced to check my ego and stressy thoughts at the door because once I’m on the ice, there’s no room for that—only hyper-focus to not fall on my ass. Even though I *will* fall on my ass. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself and my work ethic. So here’s to pouring your time/energy/money into something other than work!

@emmachamberlain ‘s quirky, cool-girl collab with @westelm that launched earlier this year has inundated our algorithms in every way. Naturally, editor @softblond curated a small collection of @Etsy items that encapsulate Chamberlain’s genre mishmashing and woodland fairy energy — grouped loosely by motif and category. A few of these picks cost less than a single West Elm throw pillow, a few cost considerably more. But the tradeoff is getting something your neighbor doesn’t have, and that you’ll likely keep for life.
