I’m honored to partner with @mohammed.a.s.ayyad to help bring the artwork of children in Gaza to a wider community.

Each design was adapted directly from drawings created by children in Gaza. No AI was used in the adaptation of their artwork.

I’ll be helping turn these drawings into pieces you can purchase while supporting the families and community behind them.

This series is a study of the birds and trees of Palestine, rooted in a simple truth: we belong to the land, not the other way around.

As Indigenous Palestinians, our relationship with Palestine is not only historical or political. We are grounded in the land itself… in its soil, its olive and fig trees, its cactus and acacia, and in the birds that nest, feed, migrate, and return among them. We belong to this landscape as its flora and fauna belong to it.

In each painting, I pair a bird of Palestine with a tree or plant of Palestine. Together, they become studies of rootedness, memory, return, and resistance. The trees stay firmly rooted and sway with the wind. The birds move freely across boundaries imposed upon their habitat. Both remain part of a living Palestinian landscape that cannot be separated from the people who have tended it, named it, remembered it, and loved it across generations.

The flora and fauna reject zio💩sm just as we do. Zio💩sm may attempt to uproot Palestinians, rename our places, appropriate our plants and foods, and rewrite the history of the land, but it cannot make us foreign to our own home. The olive tree does not become less Palestinian because someone destroys it or claims it as something else. A border does not make a native bird foreign to the sky on its other side. Displacement does not transform an Indigenous people into strangers.

These paintings are my study of that belonging. They are about being rooted even when we are uprooted, returning even when return is denied, and recognizing ourselves in a landscape that continues to testify to who and what belongs there.

We belong to Palestine, Palestine does not belong to anyone. Like its trees, we are rooted in its earth. Like its birds, we know the way home. All pieces for sale and will come with a colored mat board - $150 - $250 sliding scale. by @softlightarts.tiff
