IN DEFIANCE, WE LISTEN DEEPER: A performance and double book launch by Luïza Luz at soft power, moving through spoken word, sung word, and deep listening.

„In these turbulent times, as many turn away from listening, we refuse to follow this indifference. In defiance, we listen deeper.“

In 2024, Luïza Luz wrote these words in the book Beneath the Surface, to address the progressive rhetoric and sudden silences of cultural and educational institutions. In 2025, they spoke these words at MoMA PS1 during the Printed Matter New York Art Book Fair, and the lecture became a new publication. Now the sentence returns to the body as a live performance.

The evening marks the launch of the second edition of Beneath the Surface: Deep Listening, Buried Narratives, and Embodied Resistance (Archive Books / we make it, 2024–26) alongside the release of In Defiance, We Listen Deeper: (dis)Embodiment & the Planetary Transition (Secret Riso Club / we make it, 2026).

IN DEFIANCE, WE LISTEN DEEPER: Eine Performance und doppelte Buchvorstellung von Luïza Luz bei soft power, die sich zwischen gesprochenem und gesungenem Wort und tiefem Zuhören bewegt.

„In diesen turbulenten Zeiten, in denen sich viele vom Zuhören abwenden, weigern wir uns, dieser Gleichgültigkeit zu folgen. Widerständig hören wir aufmerksamer zu.“

Im Jahr 2024 schrieb Luïza Luz diese Worte in dem Buch „Beneath the Surface“, um auf die progressive Rhetorik und das plötzliche Schweigen kultureller und bildungspolitischer Institutionen einzugehen. Im Jahr 2025 sprach sie diese Worte im MoMA PS1 während der Printed Matter New York Art Book Fair, und aus dem Vortrag entstand eine neue Publikation. Nun kehrt der Satz als Live-Performance zurück.

„I like to talk“ ist ein offener Gesprächskreis, der auf Erfahrungsaustausch über das Leben in einer patriarchalischen Gesellschaft abzielt und von soft power Mitglied @olivia.acar ins Leben gerufen wurde. Das Format lädt dazu ein, zusammenzukommen und über jene Momente zu sprechen, in denen das Persönliche auf das Strukturelle trifft; offene Fragen, Herausforderungen und Ideen zu diskutieren.

The format invites participants to come together and talk about those moments in which the personal meets the structural; to discuss open questions, challenges, ideas.

We are happy to invite you to join us for a book presentation by Erin Honeycutt (CUTT PRESS) @cutt_press, in conversation with Krys Huba on Saturday, 17.10. at 19.00 – the final day of Krys Huba’s solo exhibition “falling into you” at soft power (extended exhibition duration).

Erin Honeycutt is a writer and bookmaker based in Berlin where they run CUTT PRESS, a publishing project with a focus on the materiality of writing and an ongoing dialogue with its tools. They are the author of “Dear Enheduanna” (2025, Ugly Duckling Presse) and “Night School” (2026, MA BIBLIOTHÈQUE) as well as various zines and novelettes.

Wir laden wir euch herzlich zu einer Buchpräsentation von Erin Honeycutt (CUTT PRESS) im Gespräch mit Krys Huba am Samstag, 17.10. um 19.00 ein – dem letzten Tag von Krys Hubas Einzelausstellung „falling into you“ bei soft power (verlängerte Ausstellungslaufzeit).

Erin Honeycutt ist Autor*in und Buchmacher*in. Honeycutt leitet CUTT PRESS, ein Verlagsprojekt mit Fokus auf die Materialität des Schreibens und im ständigen Dialog mit dessen Werkzeugen. Als Verfasser*in von „Dear Enheduanna“ (2025, Ugly Duckling Presse) und „Night School“ (2026, MA BIBLIOTHÈQUE) sowie verschiedener Zines und Noveletten lebt und arbeitet Honeycutt in Berlin.

Entangled bodies emerge, occupying the space like a fresco on the walls of a streamer’s grotto. Drawing connections between image, body, and narrative, the artist transfers fragments of buried digital relics onto the canvas, bringing them into conversation with references from historical portrait painting, early performance practice and queer feminist activist histories. Figures recurring in expressive, life-sized gestures in oil, returning our gaze, falling into you.

Verschlungene Körper tauchen auf; sie besetzen den Raum wie eine Wandmalerei in einer Streamer-Grotte. In Verbindung zwischen Bild, Körper und Narration überträgt Huba Fragmente digitaler Relikte auf die Leinwand. Dort treten sie in Austausch mit Referenzen aus historischer Porträtmalerei, früher Performance-Praxis und queer-feministischer Aktivismusgeschichte. Figuren wiederholen sich in expressiven, lebensgroßen Gesten in Öl und erwidern unseren Blick, falling into you.

Im Rahmen von Krys Hubas Einzelausstellung „falling into you“ bei soft power freuen wir uns, euch am Donnerstag, 8.10. um 19.00 zu einem Abend mit Performative Lesungen & Konzert von ANYX, Krys Huba & Leda Bourgogne einzuladen

ANYX is the solo project of Berlin-based composer and performance artist Anna Lucia Nissen, working across experimental songwriting, electronics and live performance. Originally trained as a sculptor, she gradually shifted her practice from physical objects towards voice and performance, while retaining a sculptural approach to form, space and resonance. Her debut album Starlink was released in August 2026. Her work has been presented at venues and institutions including Volksbühne (Roter Salon), KW Institute for Contemporary Art, PSM Gallery, Lido and Kantine am Berghain.

ANYX ist das Soloprojekt der in Berlin lebenden Komponistin und Performancekünstlerin Anna Lucia Nissen, die sich mit experimentellem Songwriting, Elektronik und Live-Performance beschäftigt. Ursprünglich als Bildhauerin ausgebildet, verlagerte sie ihren Schwerpunkt nach und nach von physischen Objekten hin zu Stimme und Performance, behielt dabei jedoch einen skulpturalen Ansatz in Bezug auf Form, Raum und Resonanz bei. Ihr Debütalbum „Starlink“ erschien im August 2026. Ihre Arbeiten wurden unter anderem in der Volksbühne (Roter Salon), KW Institute for Contemporary Art, PSM Gallery, Lido und Kantine am Berghain präsentiert.

To cross from the documented reality of Jenni’s room into Huba’s imagery is to step over a threshold where the logics of time, space, and gravity have dissolved into the grotesque. Der Übergang von der dokumentierten Realität von Jennis Zimmer in Krys Hubas Bildwelt gleicht dem Überschreiten einer Schwelle, an der sich die Logiken von Zeit, Raum und Schwerkraft ins Groteske aufgelöst haben. Jenni slept with the lights on, not out of fear, but as a courtesy to her fans. In a reversal of the Panopticon, instead of being trapped and neutralized by an invisible, policing observer, she claimed the power of visibility. Krys Huba treats the painting itself as a relic of the screen, a durable monument to a fleeting transmission. The distance collapses, pulling the viewer into an immersive surrender, a sensation of falling into the pixelated gaze of the past. As the border between the observer and the observed dissolves, these bodies do not yield to our presence. Instead, they materialize as a fierce site of resistance.

Jenni schlief bei eingeschaltetem Licht, nicht aus Angst, sondern aus Rücksicht auf ihre Fans. In einer Umkehrung des Panoptikums – statt gefangen und neutralisiert von einem unsichtbaren, überwachenden Beobachter – beanspruchte Sie die Macht der Sichtbarkeit für sich. Krys Huba behandelt das Gemälde selbst als ein Relikt des Screens, als beständiges Monument einer flüchtigen Übertragung. Die Distanz zwischen der historischen Webcam und dem physischen Raum kollabiert und zieht die Betrachter*innen hinein in das Gefühl, in den verpixelten Blick der Vergangenheit zu fallen. Während die Grenze zwischen Beobachter*in und Beobachtetem verschwimmt, weichen diese Körper vor unserer Präsenz nicht zurück. Stattdessen materialisieren sie sich in kämpferischem Widerstand.

As a painter and writer, Krys Huba’s research centers on what they call the “pre-streamers” of the twentieth century who addressed the camera directly and sustained a permanent gaze. Drawn to this strange beauty of reclaiming one’s own body, the story of JenniCam – the first live streamer on the internet active from 1996-2003 – became an impulse for Krys Huba‘s series of paintings and writing, bringing the traces that trans, non-binary, agender, intersex, and women pioneers have left online into dialogue with a digital present caught between the renegotiation of Foucault‘s Panopticon, the stalker as a figure of unauthorized access, and the deepfake that strips bodies of their consent.

Krys Huba konzentriert sich als Maler*in und Autor*in auf die sogenannten „pre-streamer“ des 20. Jahrhunderts, die sich direkt an die Kamera wandten und einen ununterbrochenen Blick aufrecht erhielten. Fasziniert von dieser eigentümlichen Schönheit, Selbstbestimmung über den eigenen Körper einzufordern, wurde die Geschichte von JenniCam – der ersten Live-Streamerin, die von 1996-2003 aktiv war – zum Impuls für Krys Hubas Werkserie aus Malerei und Text. Die Arbeiten bringen die Spuren, die trans*, nicht-binäre, agender, intersexuelle und weibliche Pionier*innen online hinterlassen haben, in einen Dialog mit einer digitalen Gegenwart, gefangen zwischen der Neuverhandlung von Foucaults Panoptikum, dem Stalker als Figur des unbefugten Zugriffs und dem Deepfake, das Körper ihrer Selbstbestimmung beraubt.

On her final day as a pioneering internet celebrity, Jennifer Ringley got up some time after 7.30am, used her computer for a while at around 1.15pm, had something to eat at 6.15pm, and then apparently went out for the evening. On December 31, 2003, JenniCam.org, the first live streamer on the internet, went offline, never to return.

An ihrem letzten Tag als wegweisende Internet-Berühmtheit stand Jennifer Ringley kurz nach 7:30 Uhr auf, arbeitete gegen 13:15 Uhr eine Weile am Computer, aß um 18:15 Uhr etwas und ging dann offenbar für den Abend aus. Am 31. Dezember 2003 ging JenniCam.org, die Plattform der ersten Live-Streamerin, offline und kehrte nie wieder zurück.
