There are SO many myths about baby head shape, and unfortunately, some of them can delay families from getting help when it’s needed.

Here are three of the biggest myths I hear as a pediatric physical therapist:

❌ Myth #1: Flat spots always fix themselves.
➡️ Some improve with repositioning and tummy time, while others benefit from additional intervention. That’s why early monitoring matters.

❌ Myth #2: A normal head circumference means a normal head shape.
➡️ Head circumference tells us about growth.. not symmetry or head shape.

❌ Myth #3: You’ll always be able to tell if your baby’s head shape is improving just by looking.
➡️ Small changes can be difficult to notice, which is why objective measurements can be so helpful.

One thing I appreciate about SoftSpot is that it gives parents a way to objectively monitor their baby’s head shape over time using guided photos.

Did you know nearly 1 in 3 babies develop some degree of head flattening? ❤️

The good news? Flat spots are common, and many babies improve with early intervention strategies like tummy time, repositioning, and addressing torticollis when needed.

One of the biggest challenges for parents is knowing if their baby’s head shape is actually improving. It can be difficult to tell just by looking.

That’s why I like tools like SoftSpot. It provides objective measurements of your baby’s head shape over time, so you can monitor progress at home instead of relying on photos or your memory alone.

Your baby’s flat spot might be connected to their NECK! 👶🏼

As a pediatric physical therapist, when I evaluate a baby with plagiocephaly, I’m not just looking at their head shape.

I’m also assessing:
✔️ Cervical range of motion
✔️ Head-turning preferences
✔️ Persistent head tilt
✔️ Strength and movement symmetry
✔️ Positioning throughout the day

Why? Because babies with torticollis or a strong positional preference may repeatedly put pressure on the same area of their head, contributing to flattening.

If we only address the flat spot without addressing the underlying neck mobility or positioning concerns, we’re potentially missing a huge piece of the puzzle!

And while we’re working on those things, monitoring head shape over time is important.
