Today is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, and I'm celebrating the power of a closed-loop system! 🌍✨

Did you know that your food scraps could be the fuel for next season’s garden?
I feed that waste to my millions of Red Wiggler worms
They digest it and turn it into nutrient-rich worm manure.
That manure is dried and sent back to gardeners to grow new, healthy veggies.

Ever noticed mushrooms popping up in your potted plants? 🍄 You’re not alone! We recently tackled this question and the answer might surprise you.

Question:

Hi Jocelyn,
We used your potting soil to replant this snake plant.Any idea what these mushroom type growths are? They grew real fast. I removed them and then these grew back again in just a few days.

Answer:

Hey Rick,
These are saprophytic mushrooms, which benefit the soil ecosystem by converting organic matter into nutrients. They look very much like plant pot dapperlings (Leucocoprinus birnbaumii).

They will not harm your snake plant as they only feed on decaying organic matter. However, they are poisonous if eaten, so please remove them if you have curious pets or children.

Their presence indicates moist, organic-rich soil and warm indoor temperatures. It can sometimes be a sign of overwatering, though they often appear in healthy pots.

What should you do?
Pick the mushrooms as they appear before they release spores.
Let the top 1–2 inches of soil dry between waterings, which snake plants prefer anyway.
Ensure the pot has good drainage.
If they persist, you can replace the top few inches of potting mix.

Overall, these mushrooms are a sign of active decomposition in the soil rather than an indication that your plant is unhealthy.
