// INDUSTRY //

Music which evokes energy toil and labour but which also tells of community; the beating heart of industrial heartlands. Live quartet sound meets archive recordings in this concert which explores memory, identity and change.

Through 2026 and 2027 we are very excited to be touring this show around the UK. We’ve been working on it for a little while and can’t wait to share it…starting at @thetungauditorium Liverpool on October 11th

Keep your eyes peeled for more shows coming to a place near you…👀

Featuring new and pre-existing work from @wmarsey + new arrangements from @will__newell + music by Julia Wolfe, Missy Mazzoli and Benjamin Britten ⭐

We are massively grateful to @vwfndn_ , the Marchus Trust, @thehinrichsenfoundation for supporting this project!

It's exactly 100 years today since the premiere of this absolute gem of a piece, Leoš Janáček's 'Kreutzer Sonata' 🎼

The quartet was inspired by Leo Tolstoy's 1889 novel (recommend), in turn inspired by Beethoven's 1803 Violin Sonata (also recommend, obv) 📖 🎻

This is one of our fave moments from the 2nd movement at our concert at @wigmore_hall last year ❤️ by @solemquartet

There's another jam-packed week ahead here at The Tung!

Kicking things off on Wednesday is one of our favourite returning acts, Tarang: New Contemporary Indian Music (presented in partnership with @milapfest ). If you can no longer attend, please let us know so someone else might be able to go in your place. Email our Box Office on boxofficetung@liverpool.ac.uk and we'll do the rest.

Three shows in three days follow Wednesday's free concert:

Crash Test Dummies (presented in partnership with @liverpool_philharmonic), supported by @abigail__pryde- last few tickets remain!

Different Trains: Made in Liverpool (promoted by @liverpool_philharmonic in partnership with @metalliverpool) - sold out!

Solem Quartet: Industry - bringing together music for string quartet with archive recorded sound - and featuring new work from composer @wmarsey and arranger William Newell- this concert will document and celebrate the rich history of industry in the UK.

We celebrated 90 years of Steve Reich in typical Southbank Centre fashion!

On the Saturday evening of our Classical Music Season Opening Week, we at Southbank Centre (@southbankcentre) brought three quartets together on one stage – Carducci Quartet (@carducciquartet), Ligeti Quartet (@theligetiquartet) and Solem Quartet (@solemquartet) – for a rare fully live performance of Steve Reich’s energetic ‘Triple Quartet’. Also on the billing was the UK premiere of a special string ensemble version of the composer’s well-known ‘Different Trains’. And, to mark the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the three quartets each performed a movement of Reich’s ‘WTC 9/11’ accompanied by a pre-recorded tape featuring real audio material from the time, in a dramatic and poignant presentation of the work.

This was a truly memorable evening in more ways than one, and was another example of how even when we celebrate established voices in classical music, we can do so in new and imaginative ways.

Out today - link in bio.

The second single from The Seasons is out on 25 September — And in the Quiet we Rose, performed by the wonderful @solemquartet. It’s the last movement of Autumn in Paris, 1918, written after May Wedderburn Cannan’s poem “Paris, November 11, 1918”.

Down on the boulevards the crowds went by,
The shouting and the singing died away,
And in the quiet we rose to drink the toasts,
Our hearts uplifted to the hour, the Day …

And in the Quiet we Rose, the second single from The Seasons (1914–18), is out on 25 September, performed by the wonderful @solemquartet. This solemn, hopeful work is the last music you hear on the album.

Like the other Seasons, Autumn in Paris, 1918 has a text behind it — May Wedderburn Cannan’s poem “Paris, November 11, 1918”.

Down on the boulevards the crowds went by,
The shouting and the singing died away,
And in the quiet we rose to drink the toasts,
Our hearts uplifted to the hour, the Day …

Next weekend we’ll be performing with the brilliant @drjesswalk at @liveatstgiles, featuring songs from Jess’s beautiful album La Solitude, The Songs of Barbara (beautifully arranged by @joe_atkins)

Barbara was an extraordinary artist who we didn’t know until Jess introduced us to her..go look her up! And have a listen to Jess’ album for some gorgeous nostalgic whimsy.

And come see us play it (plus some more French gems from the Boulanger sisters) @liveatstgiles 5pm on Sunday 13th! by @solemquartet
