There's another jam-packed week ahead here at The Tung!

Kicking things off on Wednesday is one of our favourite returning acts, Tarang: New Contemporary Indian Music (presented in partnership with @milapfest ). If you can no longer attend, please let us know so someone else might be able to go in your place. Email our Box Office on boxofficetung@liverpool.ac.uk and we'll do the rest.

Three shows in three days follow Wednesday's free concert:

Crash Test Dummies (presented in partnership with @liverpool_philharmonic), supported by @abigail__pryde- last few tickets remain!

Different Trains: Made in Liverpool (promoted by @liverpool_philharmonic in partnership with @metalliverpool) - sold out!

Solem Quartet: Industry - bringing together music for string quartet with archive recorded sound - and featuring new work from composer @wmarsey and arranger William Newell- this concert will document and celebrate the rich history of industry in the UK.

We welcomed over 11,000 people across 6 days to our Classical Music Season Opening Week!

As Head of Classical Music at Southbank Centre (@southbankcentre), I’m really proud of the way we ensure there are as many different ways for as many different people as possible to experience classical music. This year, our Season Opening Week truly set the stage for the season to come. With everything from an epic staged protest and a hypnotic clubnight, to a folk music-infused evening and an immersive soundbath, there really was something for everything.

Swipe for all of the photo highlights.

Our new Resident Artist Jean Rondeau dazzled the audience with his unique interpretation of Bach’s ‘Goldberg Variations’ on the Queen Elizabeth Hall Organ…

Audiences danced, cried, and meditated to Pararochestra’s immersive performance of Steve Reich’s ‘Music for 18 Musicians’.

We opened in the most ambitious and meaningful way as we staged Julia Wolfe’s ‘Fire In My Mouth’ – part protest and part commemoration of the 146 people – many of them young immigrant women – who lost their lives in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York in 1911. Featuring Southbank Centre Resident Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra (@philharmonia_orchestra), London Voices, Farnham Youth Choir (@farnham_youth_choir), RSNO Youth Chorus (@rsnoofficial), conducted by Marin Alsop (@marinalsop.conductor).

Resident Orchestra London Philharmonic Orchestra and Friends, conducted by Principal Conductor Ed Gardner, also performed on an epic scale with Britten’s ‘War Requiem’ – a powerful gesture of sorrow and mourning…

We celebrated 90 years of Steve Reich in typical Southbank Centre fashion!

On the Saturday evening of our Classical Music Season Opening Week, we at Southbank Centre (@southbankcentre) brought three quartets together on one stage – Carducci Quartet (@carducciquartet), Ligeti Quartet (@theligetiquartet) and Solem Quartet (@solemquartet) – for a rare fully live performance of Steve Reich’s energetic ‘Triple Quartet’. Also on the billing was the UK premiere of a special string ensemble version of the composer’s well-known ‘Different Trains’. And, to mark the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the three quartets each performed a movement of Reich’s ‘WTC 9/11’ accompanied by a pre-recorded tape featuring real audio material from the time, in a dramatic and poignant presentation of the work.

This was a truly memorable evening in more ways than one, and was another example of how even when we celebrate established voices in classical music, we can do so in new and imaginative ways.

And in the Quiet we Rose, the second single from The Seasons (1914–18), is out on 25 September, performed by the wonderful @solemquartet. This solemn, hopeful work is the last music you hear on the album.

Like the other Seasons, Autumn in Paris, 1918 has a text behind it — May Wedderburn Cannan’s poem “Paris, November 11, 1918”.

Down on the boulevards the crowds went by,
The shouting and the singing died away,
And in the quiet we rose to drink the toasts,
Our hearts uplifted to the hour, the Day …

A truly beautiful evening of music with Jessica Walker as she performed her latest album La Solitude in full for the first time.
The album is a celebration of the work of French singer Barbara (1930–1997) who rivalled Brel for fame in her lifetime, yet her songs remain barely known outside France.
Jess’s new English translations bring her extraordinary lyrics — of personal loss, desire and tragedy — to an English-speaking audience for the first time, in sublime new arrangements by Joseph Atkins who accompanied on piano and accordion, and LASG friends, Solem Quartet.
