RIVER RUNS RED IS WITH @harpervoyagerus RIVER is first and foremost, my love letter to Hanoi, to the ancient city that was the hinge between the old and the new, a pot of Chinese-influenced culture mixed with French aesthetics. the main characters of RIVER—the two sisters—were born to represent ambitious women who lived on this hinge, who went through historical time without knowing the rest of their lives had changed. my motivation to write this book was because i beefed with my little sister almost every day growing up and yet if anything happens to her, i’m killing everyone in this room and then myself. but truly, i wanted to tell a story of the deep and complicated sibling relationships, where each person reflects the wider political landscape of Tonkin in the 1920s. i crafted every single character from the people i know and admire. i wanted to pull the strings that connect and build us all. i wanted to explore identities in the context of family, politics, love, and how we take a piece of everything to construct our own person. i wrote RIVER drawn from an endless reservoir of courage that my grandfather and my ancestors had given me. it’s not a surprise that every character in this book is plagued with their own legacy. here’s mine. so thank you, thank you for the legacy. thank you to @francescaa_394 @angelinearodriguez @wmebooks and @archmandrate for loving RIVER as much as i do, and to @ellezidong @yijun_owithadash @farahabuthaher for being with me since the very beginning. lastly, thank you @nathcreare for all the incredible arts! i cannot wait to welcome you to Hanoi. the river will run red tonight. 🏷️ bookstagram fantasybook fantasybookstagram announcement bookdeal writingjourney traditionalpublishing newbook bookcommunity booksofinstagram readersofinstagram writerlife bookrecommendations booksbooksbooks booklover writingcommunity fantasywriter author toberead authorlife authorcommunity authorsofinstagram sciencefictionwriter sciencefictionbook writingcommunity by @solrhoang

02.09.2026 this time last year, i was in hanoi, washed in red flags and yellow stars. this year, i spent missing the heat, the sweat, the humidity. as i get older, i start to understand the concept of fearing changes. i fear that one day i go to vietnam and i wouldn’t recognize my streets anymore. last year, i stood with my mum in Tonkin Free School Square, listening to the sound of helicopters arriving to the Independence Day parade, feeling an overwhelming emotion of realizing she no longer feared that sound, and that i have never feared it. what different lives we have led, and i don’t know yet how much more different they would even be. hanoian streets are changing, as they have been since my research for my book RIVER RUNS RED required me to dig up a map in 1925. as they will continue to be. i accepted it as a concept, but i also rejected when it happened to my city and my country.
