POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Screenshots from my virtual panels at #Worldcon this weekend! Ended up doing 6 panels & 1 virtual reading (the last of which I forgot to take a screenshot for.)

*Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Magical Realism*, mod. Kimlyn Stanyon, feat. Joyce Chng, Reuben "Tihi" Hayslett & me brought up a bunch of parallels btw the enchanted everyday in both Mexico (where Tihi is resident) & SG, w Tihi suggesting that the expectation of realism is a colonial mentality... but which also got complicated when I pointed out that I'm stanning not only García Márquez & Mo Yan but also Jeanette Winterson & Angela Carter. Slides from a v brief presentation I did about magical realism in China & Southeast Asia!

*Gods Did WHAT?! Creation Stories from Around the World*, mod. Alana M. Vincent, feat. Cheryl Morgan, Juliette Wade, Sean Mead & me, ended up being taken up by an intro where we recounted creation myths—Sumerian, Shinto, Maya & Bugis respectively, to which Alana pointed out none of us were covering our own cultures. I explained I'd chosen Bugis partly cos I'm trying to promote awareness of more indigenous Southeast Asian perspectives & also cos it was super queer (bissu ftw!), but also got to talk about the Chinese myth of Pangu. (Really sad that Sonia Sulaiman had to drop out last min!)

*Reimagining the Dragon: Fantasy Worlds of East and SE Asia*, mod. me, feat. Joyce Chng, K. M. Enright & Wen-yi Lee, was a bit of a hoot: as I pointed out, this might've a hashtag-diversity panel, but we were *not* v diverse, consisting of 3 Chinese SGans who write queer sh*t & a Pinoy American—& also, "dragon" is a weirdly basic way to characterise Asian fantasy. Fun times talking about the early dearth of Asian Anglophone fantasy (neither Joyce nor Wen-yi could 100% relate to the wuxia of Channel 8) & its current growth; our shared love of horror & the realisation that actually all 3 of em were happily incorporating "Western" elements into Asian settings: werewolves, vampires, pyrokinetic powers that were actually from ATLA.

Part 5 of Southeast Asian writers! Retellings, underworld dealings, and political thrillers — listen, we've got the range.

One thing I have loved so much while making this series is not only connecting with newer SE Asian authors, but also seeing exactly how rich our stories are, whether we're writing stories set in our homeland, creating dynamic worlds out of fantastical backdrops, or focusing on contemporary tales with Southeast Asian main characters. We really are out here carving our own niches, and I am so so humbled to get to be one tiny cobblestone in a long road for other SE Asian writers to walk. Listen, you're not ready for this new wave of Southeast Asian writers! But you could be! Keep an eye on all of us!!!

I'm excited to keep this series going past May. Know a Southeast Asian writer? Are you one? Drop your handle (but please, no AI!).

2025 writing wrapped 🎾✍️

to get a little serious (and sappy), i haven't been in the best place with my writing recently. but going through my wrapped and looking back at everything i accomplished this year, it's crazy to see how far i've come. and doing this wrapped was a good reminder that even after everything, i'm still moving forward.

writing has been, and will always be, what carries me. so, i'm thankful for everything that writing has given me this year: purpose, escape, and community. thank you all for being here and following along ❤️

special thanks to @avaasbooks for the template and @solrhoang @ellezidong for the inspo!

I had the absolute joy of receiving the E-arc of @itsquinnli 's Reverent Anthology, boasting of a brilliant and diverse lineup of writers, dabbling in Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Literary and Speculative Fiction, focusing on the concept of divinity.

In my language, we have a rather beautiful word. Dastarkhwan; a brilliant and decadent spread of the finest of gourmet cuisine, not only for its quality, but for its heart and essence, and difficult to replicate otherwise. To me, Reverent Anthology has been nothing short of that. Let me just recount a few of the book’s stunning array of works.

Shephard DiStasio’s GENESIS 19:1-11 stood out to me from that first line, highlighting the pain of being a daughter.

LANGUAGE OF THE GODS: THE USE OF MUSIC IN VIETNAMESE SHAMANIC RITUALS by @thesolarhoang , a deep dive into the Vietnamese shamanic culture and history of music in folk beliefs, was an absolute thrill to read.

A fast-paced thriller, THE SILENT DARK by Helen Z. Dong pulls you it with its intense and captivating story about a girl who can trade her lifeforce.

Tien Lee’s WORDS TO THE WIND is a stunning epistolary story about two strangers whose secretive conversations are carried by the wind. It transports one to the bleak and beautiful setting Tien painted.

Enoli Lee’s OWENVSV is a masterpiece in challenging the gender-conforming norms and embracing one’s own self, of dealing with the erasure of culture and identity till one finds themselves worshipping foreign gods. In a few words, Enoli manages to rouse the sentiment and lets the protagonist soar.

The anthology delivers in spades the concept and all that people perceive divinity to be in their own unique perspectives and manners, whether it be through nature, creatures, angels, or one’s own self; going well beyond the presumed aesthetics to explore the concept in both its beauty and dread. I’d highly recommend the book. For me, it is a five-star read.

COVER REVEAL🐍😇

I am proud to reveal the cover of REVERENT: An Anthology of Divinity, illustrated by Harvey Oliver Baxter @lastvanillasmile

Coming February 28th 2025

Harvey executed our vision in an incredible manner. I gave him an early pinterest board and a list of symbolism I gathered across the pieces in the anthology, and this is the masterpiece he created for us!

My favourite symbols are the snakes, the moon, the sun and the wings! What's yours?

I can't wait for you to get a copy of Reverent, whether ebook or paperback (at this time, available upon release), and to see the upcoming interior formatting by Jun T.N., that we'll give you a sneak peek of later in the month 👀

Pre-order via Amazon or Ko-fi (check my 🔗)

Featuring work by Solar Hoàng, Tea Campbell, Enoli Lee, Aidan Sparks, Perla Zul, C.J. Ellison, Olive J. Kelley, H.S. Wolfe, Alice Scott, Ivy L. James, Riley Daemon, Kate Duarte, Andromeda Ruins, Helen Z. Dong, Engel M. Williams, Miranda Jensen, Tien Lee, Alex Harvey-Rivas, Ares Macabre, DC Guevara, Harvey Oliver Baxter, Elise Georgeson, Shepard DiStasio, Bucky A. Wolfe, Jeanea Blair, A.R Zeitler, K.T. Angelo, Casper E. Falls, and Viktor E. Grace Lang.

A collection of stories, poetry and non-fiction dedicated to the divine.

Divinity exists in everything. Divinity exists everywhere.

In the past, present and future. In the miniscule and the grand. From fantastical realms and worlds of depth to what lives and suffers in our very own reality. From the gods above, to the girl sitting by your side. Divine.

It's all divine. And this anthology is but a capsule of what divinity means in the interpretations and eyes of these authors.
