Happy International go skate day from Somalia❤️🛹 taken in Garowe, Puntland State Of Somalia by @somaliaskateboarding

Last month, we rolled with purpose 🛹

The Block proudly powered a skateboarding fundraiser bringing together a bold, creative community in support of building Kisumu’s first skate park.

Skaters, artists and supporters from East Africa and beyond came through raising voices through movement, film, art and conversations that matter.

We captured powerful interviews with organizers, community leaders and culture-shapers who are helping define the future of skate in the multiple regions.

Each board from the event tells a story and we’re not done yet!

Custom skateboard pieces from the fundraiser will be posted shortly. Watch this space and be part of the push.

First DIY Skatepark in Somalia! This is video we premiered at the East Africa Skateboarding film premiere and art exhibition! Through selling art made out of skateboards and photo prints of skateboarding! We raised 80,000kes selling art to go towards a skate trip to Kisumu! We had a goal to raise 180,000kes so we are still short, but art is still here for sale! Just reach out to us if you want to support!

Big shout out to @theblock.studio @geco.cafe and @moyeecoffee for sponsoring us and helping make this happen! Also big shout out to @ruel_________ @moeazy @george_zuko #for the amazing help they brought!

Big thank you to @ugandaskateboardsociety @tanzaniaskateboardingcommunity @smallsteps_skatepark @skateboarding_society_of_kenya

First kid in Somalia to learn a drop in!? Abdinoor learned how to drop in the quarter pipe in less than 20 minutes this evening. First time dropping in is something that takes a large amount of courage and bravery. Unreal how fast they are progressing! He will be teaching the other kids what he learned today and they will pass the skill down to the others!

Public spaces are extremely important for youth to develop communication skills. Roughly 60% of Somalia’s population is under 25 and there is little to no public spaces available for use! Some cities do not even have one public space! It’s more than just Skateboarding, it’s a community space and a creative outlet that many of us call home. Everyone deserves the right to a public space. 🛹 ❤️
