The final artist spotlight of the "True Colors" exhibition, featuring Julia Rooney

be sure to see "True Colors" at F+V through tomorrow, and then during the final week of September 1st - 5th. The gallery will be closed August 25th - 28th.

Julia Rooney (b. 1989, New York, NY) is a visual artist who makes paintings and site-specific installations grounded in real space, analog material, and the human body. Sensitive to the increasing dominance of a screen-based world, she creates work rooted in physicality and the bodily perception of one’senvironment, often responding to conditions such as light, scale, texture, and architecture. Recent solo and two-person exhibitions include Feels Like (2026, Queen Projects, Bellingham, WA), Tilt (2026, Yale Divinity School, New Haven, CT), Flats (2025, Essex Flowers, NYC), In the weather of it, (Below Grand, NYC), Blueprint (Band of Vices, Los Angeles, CA) and Album (2023, Freight+Volume, NYC). She has been awarded residencies and fellowships through The Joan Mitchell Foundation, The Rema Hort Mann Foundation, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, The Studios at MASS MoCA, Yale University Art Gallery and DNA Residency, amidst others. She holds an MFA in Painting/Printmaking from Yale School of Art and a BA in Visual & Environmental Studies from Harvard College.

Big teeth moment featuring @somehightide and Baby Felix at the opening @kate_werble_gallery

She was teething and I wish I had some kind of squishy teeth stress ball toy for her to hold. She has having a real art connection with this work- she reached her hands out gesturing to touch and squeeze.

Join us tonight, Saturday, August 8th, 6:00–7:30 PM, for a conversation moderated by Saul Ostrow with six of the eight artists in True Colors — Mary DeVincentis, Jai Hart, Riad Miah, Ilse Sorensen Murdock, Julia Rooney, and Cordy Ryman.

Free and open to the public. Refreshments served.

The exhibition's title carries a double reference. First, to Anthony Haden-Guest's legendary "True Colors" column in Vanity Fair — his chronicle of 1980s downtown New York, where glamour, performance, visibility, and hidden dynamics constantly overlapped. Here, though, True Colors still works as a kind of tell-all, but turns its lens on something else: a space where authenticity and performance, mood and structure, surface and revelation fold into one another.

Thank you to The Brooklyn Rail and to Ekin Erkan for the thorough review of Freight+Volume’s current show, TRUE COLORS. I’m honored to be in the company of seven other artists working with color in rich and varied ways: Meghan Brady, Mary DeVincentis, Jai Hart, Riad Miah, Ilse Sorensen Murdock, Cordy Ryman and Paul Sevigny. The show has been extended through the end of the summer, and the gallery will host an artist talk and reception on Saturday, August 8 at 6pm.

Along with a fantastic group of artists, I will have 2 pieces in Morgan Lehman’s upcoming group show, opening Thursday, June 11 from 6-8pm. This piece is part of a series of light-sensitive chemical paintings based on hand-painted 35mm slides I produce and then enlarge using projection.
