Hello lovely people, and thank you for being here. I’m Lacey—founder + designer behind Somer Studio. My journey in fashion began in 2014, when I started a three-year diploma in fashion design. Shortly after graduating, I joined a leading Australian activewear brand, where I had the chance to learn from people I still admire today. Wanting work closer to home, I sadly resigned and later joined another incredible brand here in South Australia. After three years there, I knew I was ready for something more. Activewear was booming, there was so much opportunity in the market, and so many people ready to seize it—they just didn’t know how. Enter: me. Within a year of working for myself, I had supported over 50 clients worldwide in bringing their ideas to life. I got to travel, see collections come to life, and gain priceless experience while refining my own process and resources along the way. Then, plot twist: babies. Two boys—now 2 and 4. That chapter took up a few wonderful years of my life, and if I’m honest, I was scared to re-enter this world. As if motherhood doesn’t make you feel out of touch enough, then you add AI into the mix and it’s like… who needs me? To my surprise, enquiries started coming in right away. And what I’ve found is this: yes, anyone can put a T-shirt on a website. But the people I’m working with are doing more than that. They’re solving problems, finding new angles, and doing things better. The level of thought, the questions, the refinement—it’s considered, intentional, and clearly shaped by people who actually wear clothes, not computers. That said, there are parts of the process we can outsource, and there’s valuable information at our fingertips that makes business feel more accessible than ever. That combination—human insight paired with new tools, makes this shift in how product is being created feel genuinely exciting. Anyway, that’s the foundation of Somer. Part 3 of my deep dive into ‘low tox’ activewear. We’ve looked at what brands are actually using, but choosing a ‘lower tox’ fibre isn’t quite as simple as natural = better. So I’ve broken down some of the most common options.. what they do well, where they fall short + what to consider when choosing between them. One thing that stayed consistent across the brands I researched? Elastane. Even brands prioritising natural and regenerated fibres are still using it where stretch + recovery are needed (good choice if you ask me). The right choice ultimately depends on the product, how it needs to perform, and what matters to your brand.
