🥒🐢🥒🐢🥒🐢 WHO LIKES PICKLES? EVER BEEN TO A PICKLE PARTY?? WELL YOU’RE IN FOR A TREAT 🎁 Our good friend @vicwatkinschef does a heckofalotta pickling under the name @fizzelpickles ! We love Vic dearly and she’s been an absolutely brilliant friend to SMP since go. She’s visited us a loyal customer, sold us her jars and condiments, advised us on kitchen matters and even cheffed a couple of times if anyone remembers the fantastic pudding club!! Sunday 25th Oct - day after jazz night - come heal your hangover and continue celebrating our 3rd Birthday with something that provenly helps…PICKLES! We’re talking: * VEGGIE dogs with cheese, friend onions, pickles and fennel ketchup * Beer battered pickles with dill aioli * Pots of ferments * AND Pickle cocktails ofc 🍸 No tickets. On Monday we were very kindly invited to attend and speak at SCRAN: A Manchester Food Conversation by @stickyfigmedia as part of @eatwellmcr ‘s month of food related fundraising. Just wanna say a massive well done to @ainemorris_ who is a great friend and regular of SMP for putting the whole thing together and having us along. You are an incredible lady and have created something very important here. All your hard-work and gentle pushing of our laptop policy 😂 truly paid off!! It was incredible to be in a room with so many brilliant members of the Manchester hospitality scene and catch up with some people we truly TRULY love and respect ❤️ Our panel was on Cultivating Taste and I felt very glad sitting next to @caroline.dubois.9674 from @iscawines - someone I consider the pinnacle of independent taste-making in every sense - that I agreed with every word she said! We really hope that this first year kickstarts many more and eventually brings about some actionable solutions to a fairly gloomy prognosis we are facing as a nation/world/species. Still feel pretty confident that the answer lies in thinking small and not sure why that always seems so unrealistic, but oh well :( Thanks @trackbrewingco for hosting too xxxx by @somethingmoreproductive

Something More Productive is a cosy independent coffee shop in Withington, just south of Manchester. It has a strong focus on speciality coffee and local suppliers. By day it’s serves about quality espresso, batch brew and filter, and occasionally, the space turns into an evening bar for jazz events. 🎃CT🎃BER ~ NEWNESS We ❤️ October! It’s our birthday month and it’s when the café feels most ‘as intended’; candles on, warm refuge from the grey, students all back and keeping us on our toes. Us being busy always drives change. So here’s some new things for the weekend: ~ VEGAN SANDWICH SPECIAL ~ Rose harissa marinated tofu, carrot & red cabbage slaw, sesame miso aioli and a house chilli crisp on the side. Served as a toastie on @holy_grain_sourdough • It’s a real hearty Autumnal one with a warming spice! ~ SIGNATURE DRINKS ~ + Kyoto Fog is staying because yall love it + Spiced Blackberry & Pear is the new syrup for the iced matcha gallys + Blackcurrant & Rosemary Autumn Spritz (just because there is still seemingly a strong iced drink market) + Cherry Bakewell Hot Chocolate (or mocha) ~ COFFEE ~ As usual the retail shelves are stacked with our fave roasters, but we’d like to highlight two particular coffees this month…. + Guest Espresso - A very special and exclusive collaboration between our friend @kobeancoffeeroasters and @cataexport . KALEIDOSCOPE ‘A Modern Blend’: This is a washed lot of exceptional and curated mixed varietals from Colombia, tasting like Amarena Cherry w/ Tropical Aroma & 70% Cocoa. It’s available in any drink that begins with espresso, as per 🍒🍹🍫 + Filter - @pale_krk sent us a sample pack a little while ago. Within that sample pack was maybe our favourite coffee we’ve tried all year….so we ordered their last remaining 3kg. We rarely put such “elevated” coffees on batch, but for our birthday month, we’d like you all to try it: A natural Gesha from Peñas Blancas, Colombia. This one tastes like Bubblegum, Dark Grape & Violets 🍬🍇💜 🎈 ~ & FINALLY, BIRTHDAYS ~ 🎈 Yes, the café is 3 at the end of this month and we have a long-awaited Jazz Night to announce soon, as well as some other events. But it’s two more really special birthday celebrations this weekend. Our Alec { @spgordoncole } is 21 & our Peach { @slicesinsyrup } is 30!! You both know exactly how special you are to SMP, but that needed to be said aloud again. I feel very lucky to have met you both, let alone work alongside ya xxxx by @somethingmoreproductive

AUTUMN CARDS by @gemmakoomen 🏕️🌲🦌🪵🍂✨ ———> swipe for ultimate cuteness We have such a limited retail space which always forces us to select only the absolute best of each category for you guys. The best coffee, the best ceramics and the best greetings cards. Good news is: we’ve just extended this section a little! We’re really proud to bring you all new cards from Gemma Koomen! I’ve been buying these cards for a while for other people and figured it was about time we became a stockist. Gemma paints and draws from her small beautiful studio in Northumberland. Her cards depict seasons, nature, everyday magic and tenderness over simply prioritising occasions. Something I can really get on board with as someone who eschews tradition, but loves sentiment (it’s a tough mix that) ❤️ We got some really cute autumnal cards in right now, but you can bet I’ve already picked our winter collection too :) Come grab a coffee and write someone you love a card whilst you’re at it ✍🏽🐢 by @somethingmoreproductive

Laptop Rules {Laptop Sucks} 💻💣🤯💀 ==== Please read the above board to keep it all above board 🏄🏽‍♀️ ==== Hanging out isn’t performative!! Reading a book on your break, taking yourself on a cute solo date or catching up with a friend over coffee is actually pretty normal and what it’s all about. It’s the very reason we’re called SMP in fact. We think it’s sad everyone’s been so thoroughly hoodwinked by this selfish hustle hellscape we live under that even now just taking some time back is branded performative. You certainly don’t need a reason to visit us, ESPECIALLY NOT IF THAT REASON IS WORK! 🤙🏽 Absolute rules are lame and don’t breed warmth and so you may notice our rules involve an amount of nuance and discretion which we are very kind with…..but then that’s where YOU come in 🫵🏽 I’ve been asked a million times by the whole team to write this post and I’ve put it off so as not to offend anyone, but that ain’t helping us. We love you all and we love this community, but keeping a lovely atmosphere going is a two way street and we need your help. We’re often too busy to personally re-enforce ‘the rules’….OR we often honestly just feel too embarrassed to relay or point out what’s written on the walls and on the tables quite clearly (same reason I put off this post I guess). In our eyes, everyone is super welcome at SMP, so we’re really just asking you to help us make sure other people (newcomers and old regulars alike) feel welcome too. You all play a vital role in keeping SMP an open and friendly space ❤️ •=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•==•=•=•=• Attached are photos of how we think the café should look/feel IN ACTUAL REAL LIFE now it’s Autumn. I’ve also attached some photos demonstrating the deteriorating effects of laptop use on @slicesinsyrup over time, for reference. I think they say it all really. 🍪🍩 <= BAKERY ROTA => 🥐🥨 Every morning we post a picture of the counter on our story. This is with a view to showing you guys which brilliant, local & award winning bakery has delivered to us fresh that morning. Below is the current bakery rota. Read it, revise it and hopefully avoid disappointment over personal and specific yummy longings 🤤 📆…. Or just turn up and see what happens, that’s what I’d do Friday - Monday / @lachouquettebakery with THE BEST French pastries in Manchester 🇫🇷 French ingredients, French people, almost too French?! Look out for the twice baked almond ones, they’re a meal in and of themselves! Tuesday - Thursday / @stickyfingersstockport . Everyone’s favourite Polish bakers 🇵🇱 based in Stockport, but currently taking over the world. Look out for the Brioche Buns and also what is, in my opinion, the most unique and perfect Cinnamon Roll in the world. Wednesday & Saturday / @longboisbakes . Levenshulme’s women owned and run neighbourhood bakery. They are incredible and often feature in Britains best bakeries lists. Look out for everyone’s favourite Blueberry & Dark Chocolate Babka. They’re vegan and they’re my favourite baked good ever. Doughy af. Those who know, truly know. Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday / for @holy_grain_sourdough . They’re our bread supplier, but they also bring the goods with both cinnamon and cardamom morning buns. You’ve all heard me say it, but cardamom bun + flat white = the best coffee/bake combo going. The Nordics do it right. ++++ We supplement all of these with our very own COOKIES baked in house by our good friend @clareharbot . We chop and change flavours, however my consistent faves are either Oat, Miso & Banana or White Chocolate, Cornflakes & Sprinkles (because I am a small child inside) 👼🏼 If that seems like a lot, it’s because it is! It’s been an absolute life and timesaver for me when travelling and it works far better than simply googling ‘speciality coffee shop near me’ and having to sift through all that! Welcome back 👋🏽🐢 Thanks to everyone that’s come flooding back in since we reopened last week. It’s great to be back up and running at full capacity. And hello to new students in the area. Can’t wait to meet y’all over the coming weeks ❤️ Hope you like great coffee and untypically friendly baristas 😂 To celebrate being back we’ve just released our August/Sept playlist at the link in bio, so feel free to listen to what we’ve been enjoying all summer and get into our atmosphere 🪐 Also, I met two really cool guys who roast coffee from Munich 🇩🇪 earlier this year @bloomtownfestival and loved what they did so ordered in a bunch of their coffees. They’re beautifully designed and taste even better. Grab a retail box or enjoy them on Guest Espresso & Hand Brew over the coming days! Finally, it’s @withingtonpride 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ this weekend and those guys always put in such an effort to bring something utterly amazing to Withington.
