Long before he went viral, this Italian artist was painting the Mahabharata.

Italian painter Giampaolo Tomassetti @giampaolotomassetti has spent years exploring Indian mythology, drawn to the scale, philosophy, emotion, and timeless human conflicts within its stories.

Between 2008 and 2013, he created 23 large-scale oil paintings inspired by the Mahabharata, bringing scenes of Krishna and Arjuna, Draupadi, Bhishma, and the fateful dice game into his own visual language.

His fascination with India began decades earlier, after he was commissioned to illustrate books on ancient Vedic culture. What followed became a long-standing artistic engagement with Indian mythology, symbolism, and storytelling. by @somewhere.ind

Indian visual artist Svabhu Kohli @svabhukohli has turned the windows of Hermès’ New Delhi store into a world of his own, where forests and oceans dance and nature takes on unexpected forms.

Created around the house’s 2026 theme, Venture Beyond, the four windows bring together hand-painted sculptures, fantastical creatures and intricate details, with familiar Hermès pieces tucked into the scenery.

There are coral reefs that resemble forest floors, floating jellyfish and plants that seem to belong to another planet.

For one night, the installation went a step further, spilling into the store itself and giving guests the chance to experience Kohli’s imagination from the inside.

The windows remain on view at The Chanakya Mall in New Delhi until January 10, 2027.

Before India transformed through globalization and the digital age, photographer Mitch Epstein spent more than a decade documenting its streets, traditions, and everyday moments.

Between 1978 and 1989, he captured a country full of contrasts — from crowded cities and religious ceremonies to cinema, family life, and quiet personal encounters.

Decades later, Epstein returned to his forgotten contact sheets, revealing a deeply intimate portrait of India with two-thirds of the images never previously published. In India is not just a record of a place, but a reflection on time, memory, and the experience of seeing a culture with humility and curiosity.

Rajasthan’s salt pans take on the appearance of abstract paintings when photographed from above. Captured by @meinbhiphotographer, the aerial series reveals geometric patterns, vivid shades of pink, orange and deep red, and intricate textures formed across the salt-producing landscape. The striking colours are influenced by varying salt concentrations and microorganisms, creating an ever-changing natural palette. by @somewhere.ind

Indian women collectively own approximately 24,000 tons of gold, accounting for about 11% of the world’s total gold holdings.

This amount surpasses the official gold reserves of the top five countries combined. The combined total of these reserves is 18,710 tonnes, which is less than the 24,000 tonnes held by Indian women.

Opened in 1964, Jaipur’s Gem Cinema is an Art Deco landmark known for its 70mm screenings, distinctive interiors and legendary Sunday morning Hollywood shows. Once one of Rajasthan’s largest single-screen theatres, it closed in 2005 as multiplexes gained popularity. The cinema briefly returned for the Jaipur International Film Festival in 2019, when its longtime projectionist brought the original equipment back to life, before reopening permanently in 2021 following a careful restoration that preserved much of its original character.

In 1957, passengers could travel from London to Calcutta (now Kolkata) by bus. The journey began on April 15 aboard The Indiaman, reaching India approximately 50 days later after crossing Europe and Asia. Covering thousands of kilometres through countries including Turkey, Iran and Pakistan, the one-way trip cost just £85, equivalent to approximately £2,600 today, with food and accommodation included. The route later became associated with the famous Albert double-decker buses, which continued carrying travellers between Europe and India into the 1970s. by @somewhere.ind

Nearly a century ago, German anthropologist Egon von Eickstedt travelled through India as part of an expedition that produced thousands of photographs, including these striking portraits from Kerala.

Taken during his 1926–29 journey, the images preserve remarkable details of hairstyles, jewellery and personal appearance in communities he encountered across the region.

But the archive carries a troubling history: Eickstedt created many of the portraits as part of an attempt to classify people according to racial theories that have since been discredited.

Today, the photographs survive both as rare visual records of 1920s Kerala and as evidence of the colonial-era anthropological gaze through which they were originally made.
