The vagus nerve is like a communication superhighway between your gut, brain, and organs 🧠🫁

In our recent conversation, Jane Ollis, co-founder of vagus nerve stimulation device @sona.help explains how the nerve signals when all is well—or not so well—and why that might affect your mood and stress levels.

Listen to the full conversation to discover how this incredible nerve is key to nervous system regulation, and how many people are changing their lives by learning to work with it 🙏

What comes after the wearable technology trend?

@janeoneuro is a medical biochemist, former NHS Vice Chair and founder of @sona.help an AI-powered vagus nerve stimulator that adapts in real time to your unique physiology

In conversation with @n4shwa_ Jane shares why she left the boardroom in her 50s to build a company in a space still dominated by younger, male-led startups and what she’s learned about stress, inflammation, HRV, neuroplasticity and the future of human performance.

That’s right, the Monday blues are a real biological phenomenon.

Why?

Because your cortisol follows a weekly rhythm as well as a daily one. Research shows it’s measurably lower on Monday mornings than any other day of the week, as your HPA axis recalibrates after the weekend’s different sleep and activity patterns.

Most people also sleep later at the weekend, which pushes the body’s circadian clock back by an hour or two. Monday morning then requires an abrupt reset that researchers have a name for: social jet lag.

In September this compounds even further. Your nervous system is simultaneously adjusting to shorter days, shifting melatonin timing and recalibrating from the weekend.

It is managing two biological transitions at once, which is why the first Monday of September reliably feels like one of the hardest of the year.

Here are two most evidence-backed tools for making it easier to give yourself that physiological reset:

1️⃣morning light within 30 minutes of waking, which accelerates the circadian reset

2️⃣slow breathwork, which activates the vagus nerve and directly counteracts the sympathetic dominance that makes Monday mornings feel so heavy.

What is your Monday morning non-negotiable? Tell us in the comments.

Some people are born without any cortisol in their system, but it’s not as fun for them as it sounds…

Contrary to what many people believe, #cortisol is not necessarily a “bad hormone”; it’s actually a really useful hormone for getting us to perform. This is why the phrase “cortisol detox” instantly gets a red flag from me. The rises and falls in cortisol levels throughout the day are actually anti-inflammatory and keep us alive!

Similarly, dopamine is not necessarily a “good hormone”; it’s just a hormone associated with reward, which is why it feels good.

Three starter tips for managing your cortisol levels:
Sunlight in back of eyes at the beginning of the day, try for calmer afternoons and evenings to support a healthy spike and take breaks if needed!

One in four of us is living with a condition that’s speeding up how fast our brains age, and most of us have never heard of it.

Our medical biochemist founder @janeoneuro explained the science behind metabolic syndrome to @stylistmagazine magazine this week.

At the root of most cases is insulin resistance, which is when cells become less responsive to insulin until the body compensates by producing more.

Look out for these five risk factors that tend to arrive together: waist size, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides.

This impacts the brain more than almost any other organ, because it runs on a constant supply of glucose through delicate blood vessels. So when that supply is disrupted, cells that should be firing and connecting start to struggle.

This comes down to a mismatch between the body we evolved in and the pace of modern life, where chronic stress, poor sleep and constant sitting all play a part.

The good news is that every factor you address counts, and understanding your nervous system’s role in stress and sleep is a good place to start.

What’s one habit you’re working on this week?

Ironically, this is an interview about stress. There’s nothing like the comedic timing of a megaphone!

Last week we took SONA to the “Glastonbury of Business”, AKA Ideas Fest and somehow managed to kick off our first interview with a megaphone interruption.

Jackie helps startup founders secure the funding they need to get on their way to greatness, which means her nervous system is working overtime on a daily basis.

She’s also one of SONA’s most passionate advocates, and we were so grateful she sat down with us to talk about stress, wellness and what actually works when you’re living a life that doesn’t slow down, even for major setbacks.

Spoiler: it’s not the megaphone.

We’re incredibly grateful to have been part of Ideas Fest this year. The conversations, the energy and the people we met over two days reminded us exactly why we do what we do.
