💡Midlife Stress: Is Your Nervous System Stuck in Overdrive? An Interview With Jane Ollis @sona.help

🎙️NEW EPISODE

Have you ever wondered why, in your 40s or 50s, you suddenly don’t seem to cope with the stress the way you used to?

Is it just getting older, is it hormones, or is it something much deeper happening inside your nervous system?

In this episode, we’re joined by medical biochemist, central nervous system expert, and founder of Sona @sona.help Jane Ollis, to unpack the science.

We explore why stress isn’t actually the enemy, why recovery is becoming one of the most important health habits in midlife, what heart rate variability can tell us about our resilience, and the simple, evidence-based strategies that can help you feel calmer, healthier, and more in control.

So whether you’re feeling burnt out, or simply want to perform at your best for the decades ahead, this episode is for you.

Jane Ollis, founder of SONA @sona.help, explores why stress itself isn’t necessarily the problem—it’s how well we recover from it, in the latest episode of the Heallist Podcast.

Jane shares a different way to think about the stress response: as a natural human capability that helps us focus, respond, and take action when we need it. She also explains why building more “headroom” before our stress response kicks in, and improving our ability to recover afterward, may be just as important as trying to reduce stress itself.

Key takeaways include:
- HRV can offer insight into how the nervous system is responding to stress and recovery
- Individual trends and context can be more informative than a single HRV reading
- Illness, lifestyle, and seasonal factors may influence HRV
- The vagus nerve plays an important role in communication between the brain and body
- Bioelectronic medicine is opening new possibilities for nervous system support and health monitoring

This conversation is shared for educational and reflective purposes, offering perspectives on longevity and wellness that integrate traditional practices with contemporary scientific inquiry.

…and the winner is!!

The @healthoptimisationsummit Start-Up Competition absolutely blew us away. Over 100 applications, dozens of decks dissected, seven incredibly strong finalists chosen, seven pitches brilliantly delivered and, genuinely, such a difficult decision.

But after some serious deliberating, we chose @sona.help as the winner, HOS London ‘26 Startup of the Year.

What stood out to us was the scale of the opportunity, the strength of the technology and, above all, the passion and calibre of the founding team.

SONA is tackling a problem that affects so many of us: stress and sleep. While most wearables are very good at telling us when we’re stressed or haven’t slept well, Sona is building technology designed to actually intervene, using real-time physiological data and non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation to help regulate the nervous system.

And this isn’t just an idea. Since launching in March, they’ve sold out their first two batches, generated £500k in revenue, built a community of 600 customers and collected more than 25,000 session datasets.

A very well-deserved win. Huge congratulations to @janeoneuro, @eliot.sona and the entire Sona team and advisory board. Stay tuned for what’s next!

The latest episode of the Heallist Podcast is now live on Spotify, Apple, and YouTube!

In this episode, we explore heart rate variability (HRV), what the number on your smartwatch or Oura Ring may reveal about your nervous system, and why it’s more useful to understand HRV in context rather than treat each daily reading as a verdict on your health.

We are joined by Jane Ollis, is the founder of @sona.help , a neurotech company developing AI-guided vagus nerve stimulation. A biochemist by training, former NASA intern, and Oxford University Business Fellow, Jane has spent her career at the intersection of heart science, technology, and human health.

Jane breaks down how HRV can reflect stress and recovery, why factors like illness, lifestyle, and seasonal changes may influence your readings, and how the heart and nervous system communicate. We also explore the science behind vagus nerve stimulation and the emerging possibilities of bioelectronic medicine. Get practical insights on how to interpret HRV trends more thoughtfully and understand what your wearable data may be telling you about stress and recovery.
