Is there any worse feeling than getting rejected — or ghosted — after a months-long hiring process? Job rejections can make you want to respond negatively, or not at all. But staying classy is still the right move.

Here's why and how to follow up, from URL Media's recruitment team, Leonor Ayala Polley (@leonordayala) and Sonali Kohli (@sonalimakes).

➡️ Remember that it's probably not about you. Companies may be looking for a very specific blend of experience, or there may be internal barriers to moving quickly.

➡️ Send a thank you note: even if you don't think it's deserved. You never know who is going to see it and remember you in a positive light.

➡️ Ask for feedback: You often won't get it, but sometimes hiring managers or recruiters will provide instructive and helpful advice for your search.

“I’m open to anything” is the WORST thing you can tell an interviewer,” says @LeonordAyala URL Media Chief of Recruitment & Workforce Development.

Hiring managers might assume …
- You lack direction.
- You have no clue what the job is or why you’d be good at it.
- You’re not that into the opportunity and would be a flight risk.

Instead, show that you understand THIS role and why you’re uniquely great for it. Subscribe to our URHired newsletter for more tips on interviewing via link in bio.

“Tell me about yourself...” The question is trash, but it kicks off most interviews. Here’s are some tips for crafting a valuable response:

1. Do NOT just regurgitate your resume
2. Incorporate a short, specific example of a work win.
3. Close with why the job at hand speaks to you.
4. Practice!

What other interview questions are the worst?

💸 Need that #promotion and have no idea how to get there? Here are 3 steps to take now. 💸

1. Start tracking a list of wins. Big or small, director of recruitment @sonalimakes keeps a list nearby (as a bookmarked window) so she can easily add to it.

2. Re-align your argument. In the ask, focus on how you’re DELIVERING business goals now, and will deliver more/different ones with the new title and comp.

3. Talk to your manager or workplace leaders who support your growth. You can navigate the path to promotion with their buy-in. #careeradvice #genzcareer #skillup

On a beautiful sunny afternoon, Sonali Kohli and Sonali Kolhatkar masterfully led an engaging and effective intergenerational conversation.

We heard from children about their concerns for the world at large, about their desire to engage with the world through community. One wise 10 yr old said it best. When he is at home watching the current events from afar it feels too big, frightening, but when he actually goes out and engages with current events, like joining a march with all its positive energy, he feels better, joyful.

We heard from parents about listening to their children, understanding them. We as caregivers may try to protect them from calamity, but kids by nature are empathetic, feelers out. They see what’s happening, regardless. So our job is to give them a place of safety, a sanctuary. We provide them the support they
need. One kid clearly stated that what he needed was snacks.

We heard from adults about the feelings of futility over activism, standing in the rain with signs, with no tangible results. But then we heard from children about personal results, feeling enlivened from engagement, especially when community members gave them a thumbs up for caring enough to get involved. We talked about how even though the news doesn’t report on measurable success, success is still being achieved.

We all talked about what lies beyond the marches.
-seeking out decision-makers and advocating to them.
-strategizing ways to get people to care through out-reach campaigns.
-researching and being informed of issues.

There was so much energy buzzing in that room (as well as a plenitude of snack, thanks to Beau and Calvary Presbyterian Church). We heard from kids as young as 7, to grandparents in their 70s, different points of views, different methods of expressing those views. There was magic in that room. The sort of communing that crosses lines of race, gender, age, politics. We were humans sharing and learning, and most importantly upholding hope that if we continue to care, we can shape the future.
