**LATENT SPACES Exhibition Announcement**

LATENT SPACES_Step inside a computer model

A spatial sound installation by Vicky Clarke (SONAMB)

Oct 23rd - 26th at SEESAW Space Basement

Preview: Thurs 23rd Oct 6.30-9.30pm (see eventbrite ticket link in bio)

Exhibition Open: Friday 24th - Sunday 26th October

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

We're surrounded by invisible technological systems where machine learning and covert algorithms shape our everyday lives. At the heart of these systems is Latent Space, a data dimension in a state of flux, where material becomes data, past meets future, and new machine languages emerge. How do we imagine these hidden spaces? What do they sound like?

Latent Spaces invites the audience to step inside the Aura Machine – an imaginary computational model combining spatial audio, sculpture, and digital objects.  Once inside the machine, audiences encounter a sonic composition of Manchester’s industrial past: mill machinery from Quarry Bank Mill, electricity, glass and metal, all processed through PRiSM SampleRNN, an early neural synthesis model now a historical relic. These sounds, layered with sculpture, drapes, and moving images, create a dialogue between computational and industrial spaces – both sites of flux, invention and memory.

This work was made possible by Sound and Music's In Motion programme.

In Motion 2024 is supported by Arts Council England, Jerwood Foundation, Garrick Club Charitable Trust, PRS Foundation & Marchus Trust. Sound and Music is a PRS Foundation Talent Development Network Partner supported by PPL UK.

With exhibition support from FutureEverything as part of the Innovate UK Cultural Accelerator programme

I am beyond honoured to have been selected on IN MOTION, Sound and Music's composer development programme, alongside 9 other talented UK artists ❤️

I'll be spending the next 18 months making new music and developing my craft with expert mentorship. The programme will also enable me to explore translating my concrete music and machine learning practice into a sound installation context, so expect experiments with tape machines, sculpture and 3D sound.

It's my birthday today 🥳 , the first one without my Dad, he would have been very proud of my being thought of as a 'composer' (need to get used to the word!)

Music means so much to me, it has got me through this last year, so this is a huge boost and motivation to keep on going as a sound artist. Can't wait to POWER UP

Thank you @soundandmusicuk and congrats to all the other artists xoxo

Post-nuclear sound, from atomic decay to rebirth.

T ½ (Half Life), is a sonic research project and sound installation exploring the acoustic memory of Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan. Built from field recordings of the earth, sky, and architectural sites of the Polygon, the piece shows the environmental traces left behind after nuclear contamination.

Created by Kamila Narysheva and Vicky Clarke, T1/2 (Half Life) makes its UK premiere at Auris Festival as a newly realised quadraphonic installation. The work will be exhibited in the bunker space at the Renold Building at Sister. As part of their collaboration, the duo have been researching Manchester’s nuclear legacy, concentrating on a period of time in the 1980’s when Manchester declared itself a ‘Nuclear Free City’. There will be an artist talk and a film screening about this time from the Northwest Film Archive, and Archives +.

T1/2 (Half Life) is made possible through the ‘Connections Through Culture’ programme from the @britishcouncil.

Happy to share that myself and Wajid Yaseen are working on a new sound art festival called Auris launching this October in Manchester!

We have a stellar line up and an AMAZING local team making this happen, across some of our best venues in the city.

Follow us @aurisfestival and aurisfestival.com for news!

Repost from Auris Festival ....

Introducing Auris Festival Curators: Wajid Yaseen and Vicky Clarke. Creative Director and Company Producer of Modus Arts (@modusarts) respectively, as well as accomplished sound artists, Wajid and Vicky are the creative minds behind Manchester's first dedicated sound art festival.

Wajid Yaseen develops the vision and programme for award-winning sound arts organisation Modus Arts, while simultaneously producing and presenting his own sonic work internationally. His artistic practice draws on an inter-disciplinary approach to developing sound-based installation, acousmatic music, graphic scores and sound sculpture, and his multi-award winning audio project Tape Letters, received widespread national media acclaim.

Hailing from Hulme Greater Manchester, Vicky champions the city's creative industries, its sound art community and the artists who shape it. A sound artist whose work explores materiality, electrical phenomena and ritual, through sound sculpture, DIY electronics and human-machine systems, she is the winner of the Oram Award (@theoramawards) 2020 for innovation in sound and music technology. Her recent installation, Latent Spaces, was described as a love letter to Manchester’s sonic and computational past.

Together they’ve shaped an unparalleled programme of local and international sound artists for Auris 2026, Manchester's first dedicated sound art festival, October 9th-11th.

Ticket launch and first-wave artist line-up to be announced July 29th! by @sonamb__

In June, Kamila Narysheva and I presented our work ‘T ½ Half Life’ as part of TEST SITES, aa listening eventing at Bétonsalon, Paris with Mesma records.

..from Bétonsalon

As part of Sandra Lahire’s exhibition “Overexposed, like an X-ray”, “Test Sites” is a sound program inspired by her work on nuclear themes.
Rather than approaching the nuclear in its spectacular — and sometimes overwhelming — dimension, the program seeks to explore its diffuse presence — almost banal and invisible — within our everyday life. Yet, operating quietly on bodies and environments, the nuclear transforms and alters over time.

Carried by multiple artists, “Test Sites” unfolds as a movement that gradually becomes more introspective and visceral. An immersive experience that engages both listening and the body, echoing the way Lahire explores processes of alteration and zones of disturbance between bodies (her own, those of workers, and non-human animals), the environment, and the film medium.

Thank you to all who attended and to Bétonsalon for the kind invitation.

We're in the endgame now System Flow-ers! With just a few days to go until the deadline, meet sound and electronic media artist Vicky Clarke (@sonamb__) whose work explores materiality, electrical phenomena and ritual ⚡

Designed and led by Vicky, here's what she has to say about this upcoming commission for music makers and sound artists...

“Over the past few years I have become increasingly aware of the systems that shape my own practice; and what I call ‘techno-emotional states’ during creative flow. This commission invites artists to explore the emotional, neurological and social dimensions of music making and creativity. Together we’ll consider systems of power and influence, engage with alternative ways of working, and imagine new collective approaches to sound and technology.”

Du lundi au vendredi : 14h-18h
Le mercredi dès 10h
Entrée libre
