photo access is pleased to be returning to Sydney Contemporary for Photo Sydney 2026, presenting the works of Danica Chappell, Sonia Mangiapane, and unseen photographs from the personal archive of renowned architect Enrico Taglietti (1926–2019). - Sonia Mangiapane is a photomedia artist working with processes defined primarily by their interaction with light, as opposed to the exclusive use of the camera. Employing a range of camera-based and cameraless methods her practice takes the form of photographic prints, cameraless or hybrid works on paper, moving image works and other light-based interventions. Themes such as the tourist gaze, Nature and the underlying constructions of the photographic are the focus of her work. Sonia’s approach is discursive, process-oriented and experimental. The colour darkroom, in particular, is a core site of her practice. Excited to see some of my moving image work on at @bunjil_place this month as part of their Art After Dark program. Screening every day in August from 5-7pm. A huge thank you to curator Angela Barnett for the invitation! Featuring my short films / \ / Pendulum (with sound by @visionsofvisions) and NTRNL RFLCTN this project is particularly close to my heart as I grew up in the area, at a time when arts content was pretty scarce in these parts! Posted @withregram • @womenaltphotogroup I am obsessed with @soniamangiapane striking images. The colour, the composition, everything it's so good. In this month's WAPG interview Sonia tells us how she creates these gorgeous prints. Here is a little snippet. "When taking photos for Ambient, Aberrant I sometimes placed prisms or other optical modifiers in front of the lens during in-camera exposure; fragmenting, distorting and abstracting the view. I then subjected some images to a second iteration of mediation during print production, through ‘darkroom interventions’—in the colour darkroom during exposure of a negative image onto photosensitive paper I used coloured filters, transmissive objects, light sources or other light modifiers to disrupt the image in some way. This process creates a hybrid image produced partly in-camera and partly in the darkroom." This work is part of First Contact @firstcontactprint, a group exhibition on until 30 November 2024 at @analoogstudioarnhem in collaboration with @wolf__books. Initiated by @aaltvandeglind. All works are photographs or images made using the contact print method. “The defining characteristic of a contact print is that the photographic result is made by exposing through the film original onto a light sensitive material pressed tightly to the film” [source: @nationalportraitgallery website]. However since I enjoy messing with most things photographic 🙃 my work was created from another photograph (rather than a negative).
