Great North Run 2026 🏃‍♀️🥇

Now I’ve had a little time to reflect… what an amazing experience!

The day started with a 5am alarm and a drive up to Newcastle, before taking on the 13.1 miles of the Great North Run.

The atmosphere along the course was incredible, the bands, the spectators, just awesome. From friends and family who travelled up to support me, to the messages of encouragement that kept popping up on my watch throughout the race and total strangers calling my name.. it all kept me going when I needed it most.

I didn’t run for a PB. Instead, I set myself a goal to run to feel, soak up the atmosphere, be present and enjoy the experience. And that’s exactly what I did. (Well, apart from the hills… I never enjoy hills! 😂)

Yesterday, an incredible 63,000 people of all ages and fitness abilities took part in this amazing event. Running a half marathon is no easy feat. It takes hard work, discipline and a huge amount of mental strength. Not to mention those who are fighting their own health battles while also challenging themselves to raise money for others.

For me, having Type 1 diabetes adds another challenge of managing my blood sugars during the race and for days afterwards until everything settles back to baseline. It’s not always easy, but it’s another factor that reminds me just how much we are capable of when we push ourselves.

Despite everyone’s individual challenges, a phenomenal £25 million was raised for various charities. I was honoured to have the opportunity to run for Hope House and I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated and supported me. With your help, I smashed my target and I’m genuinely humbled by your generosity. ❤️

So, turning 50 is not all that bad after all! I’ve finally learned to run my own race, while continuing to challenge myself, push my own limits and be the best version of me 💪 by @sonicsonya.pt
