The Ghost Cat: Stories of Spirit & Survival in the Himalayas

Join Sony Alpha Female @megbrief at the Bozeman Photo Expo, Oct 17-18, for an intimate journey into the elusive realm of the Snow Leopard!

Snow Leopard habitat spans 12 countries across Central and South Asia, overlapping with communities that have called these high mountains home for generations. The elusive nature of Snow Leopards lends them an air of mystique that only deepens as the altitude climbs.

Communities throughout the Himalayas have come to know them by their moniker, the “Ghost of the Mountains.” In the Mangyu Valley of Ladakh, where Buddhism predominates, the Snow Leopard is a sacred symbol. Monks at Rizong Monastery teach compassion for all living beings; villagers install predator-proof corrals to safeguard livestock; women spin wool into Snow Leopard souvenirs; and local guides inspire tourists to become champions of conservation.

While this big cat inspires awe in some cultures, it conjures fear in others. Snow Leopards face numerous threats, including declining prey populations, attacks from feral dogs, habitat loss, poaching for the illegal wildlife trade, and retaliatory killings resulting from human-wildlife conflict.

I ventured to the Himalayas in search of a ghost, but I discovered that the wild spirit of the Snow Leopard lives in the hearts of Ladakh’s people. They taught me the power of learning to read fragments of a life you may never come to see, and that protecting the Snow Leopard means protecting the delicate relationships that sustain life in these mountains.

🏆 And the winner is… Stef Goza!

Congratulations to Stef Goza, winner of the Stewart’s Sony Photo Contest with her stunning image, “Majesty in Motion.” 📸

We received a lot of excellent submissions, and it was exciting to see so many incredible images from our photography community. Stef’s image really stood out and captured the beauty and movement of Alaska in a remarkable way.

Here’s a smoother, more polished version that keeps your personal and photographic tone:
I had the opportunity to work with a model, Isabella, @isabelladrift this past April at the Sony Alpha Creative Space on the road, #SonyCreativeSpace, under the guidance of award-winning artist Brooke Shaden @brookeshaden

Surrounded by the natural beauty of Tingley Beach, I had the chance to explore and experience the power of the Sony α7 V, paired with the fast and versatile 24–70mm GM II f/2.8 lens. It was an inspiring experience that allowed me to experiment, learn, and push my creativity in a beautiful setting taken in Tingley Beach by @sony.hawk

The ICON 🌟

This bold hat was originally going to be designed for Beyoncé. Due to last-minute decisions with her team, we were able to snatch it up from Darren at @djameshats and have it redesigned for this outfit!

This impeccable venue had both big and small spaces, meaning sometimes we were working in very cramped spots to get the shot. What made shooting in these spaces easier was the fact that both the @sonyalpha 28-70 and the 24-105 are such versatile zoom lenses. I was able to get super wide environmental shots showcasing the location, but I was also able to zoom in to get detailed photos of @maleeyakhg without missing a beat. On top of that, these lenses were FAST and SHARP! Meaning we moved through the venue quickly, getting every shot in every corner without missing focus! Safe to say these lenses are perfect for any portrait and location situation!
