🔦 Project Spotlight: Niin Luonto Vastaa / As Nature Answers 🔦

Collective imagination practitioners @iinesrein, @sooon.studio and Zeynep Falay von Flittner have been exploring the potential of intentionally creating new language reflecting the multiplicity of nature relationships and interactions.

Across collaborative workshops and research, they have been exploring how collective imagination and participatory language-making can help articulate and form a shared understanding of what is felt, and yet unnamed: grief, care, kinship and the complexity of experiences which shape our societal entanglement with the natural world.

In their workshop process they looked for shared experiences to describe, and participants consistently found themselves reaching for language that expressed the complexity of emotions felt in connection with the natural world. Joy, wonder, awe and appreciation were contrasted with feelings of shame and disconnect. New terms were developed and defined, each one carrying an intention to name, to confront, or to imagine differently. Some words sought to more accurately describe the present, giving language to emotions and realities often left unspoken.

The participants effectively formed political imaginations of several key issues within the current system, and what a more desired eco-social reality would be like, connected by changes in language as an intervention point.

Futures Folk ry is a nonprofit expert association, founded to advance democratization of regenerative futures. We believe that futures should not be shaped by a few, but imagined and built collectively.
Our work focuses on making scientific knowledge accessible, while expanding and diversifying the very knowledge base that informs decisions about our shared futures. Our philosophy emphasizes creative and participatory approaches.

Our board includes communication, design, and regenerative futures experts Andrea Gilly, Iines Reinikainen and Savannah Vize.

What to expect?
In our first year, we are building for long-term impact. We will focus on collaborating with other associations and organizations to provide education for staff and volunteers, as well as practical support in project work. Alongside this, we are preparing to launch our own initiatives aligned with our key impact areas.

We warmly welcome conversations with collaborators who share our commitment to more inclusive and regenerative futures. Feel free to get in touch with us by email: futuresfolk@proton.me

🐰 Keep up to date with us!
Follow us on Instagram to stay connected with our work, reflections, and insights on democratizing futures. You can also find us on Linkedin, and on Substack, where our upcoming newsletter will dive deeper into our thinking and projects. Links in the bio!

✨ A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for The Futures We Create workshops at @emmamuseum last week

Over two sessions, we welcomed 20 participants to explore eco-emotions and imagined hopeful futures together through storytelling, imagination and futures thinking. It was a joy to share space and creativity with each of you 🌱💭

We’re especially grateful to the @espooesbo for selecting our work as part of Future Stories Art Mobs, and to the incredible team at @emmamuseum for so generously hosting us in the beautiful Luova room. Your support, attention to detail, and belief in our work made these workshops possible 🙏

The positive feedback has left us feeling re-inspired to apply for further funding, so that we can hopefully welcome even more people into future workshops ✨

We leave feeling grateful, energised, and hopeful for the futures we can create together. We look forward to sharing the stories collected in the workshops with you soon 🔮

After 5 incredible years in Helsinki, I’ll be moving to #Copenhagen this October 🇫🇮 ➡️ 🇩🇰

Helsinki, my wonderful colleagues and connections, and the Aalto CS community I first moved here for, have shaped me and my practice in countless ways. I will miss Finland immensely, but it's time for a new chapter.

In Copenhagen, I’m especially looking to make new connections and collaborations around:
🌱 Social and collective imagination
🌍 Climate resilience and adaptation
🤝 Community engagement
🔎 Design research

This is both through my independent practice as a designer-researcher, and with @falaydesign, as we’d love to expand our work into the Danish context.

I’ll also be continuing my freelance #visualdesign practice with a focus on eco-social sustainability, working on projects like sustainability reporting, illustration, and climate education resources.

💛 I’d love to start building my network in Copenhagen and Denmark, so if you’re in these spaces, or know someone I should meet, please connect us. I’d be delighted to start booking in some coffee dates from November onwards 🇩🇰

Feel free to tag people in the comments or reach out directly ✨ taken in Copenhagen, Dennmark by @sooon.studio

🌊 Searching for UCEs through the sea mist 🌊

Yesterday, our first Niin Meri Vastaa workshop took us memory-foraging to the sea, through a meditative journey carried by sea mist.

Together we searched for UCEs (Unidentified Collective Entities): shared sensations, relationships, and moments with the sea that had no name in any of our languages.

Then we gave them names.
New words. New stories.
Language for futures of care, reciprocity, and belonging with the living world.

Next, we'll be holding an in-person version of the workshop with friends and collaborators of Falay in Helsinki.
And then… a Dictionary of New Words for Nature Relationality.

Thanks to all who attended, and gratitude as always to the #CollectiveImaginationPracticeCommunity for funding this exploratory work A blue UFO floats and beams up 3 metallic mackerel, with some seaweed beneath by @sooon.studio

Glimpses from Shepherds Between Worlds: A Ceremony for Letting Go.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Sunday for the workshop-ceremony. Your presence and support during this first session meant a lot 🍄

Thank you, @diorela, @savannahvizedesign, and @estherhgrossman for sharing your journey with us and contributing to “A river of seeds” 🌱

Thank you, Oksasenkatu 11, for being such a generous space, and @oksasenkatu11 ’s team for trusting me with this cycle of performance-ceremonies 🪷

Thank you, @robancolyer and @savannahvizedesign, for documenting this experience ✨

The next ceremony will happen in June; I will keep you posted 🔥

Un abrazo,
Daniela (o la María de Candama)
__

“A river of seeds” consists of four performance-ceremonies to take place at Galleria Oksasenkatu 11 throughout 2025. Together, they explore the themes of death and rebirth, beginnings and endings. Understanding ceremonies as gatherings rooted in gratitude, attention, and connection, the cycle offers audiences an intimate yet collective framework to hope, grieve, celebrate, and release. Each session adopts a particular format —circle, workshop, birthday party, funeral— exploring the intersections between ritual and art, performance and ceremony.

“A river of seeds” is curated by Candama, a semi-fictional agency that offers curating, coaching, and poetic consultancy services. Candama is a project by artist and curator Daniela Pascual Esparza, through which she creates a context for her practice while nurturing collaborations with other artists and professionals. by @sooon.studio
