Delectable Geologies 🪨

If you could eat a landscape, where would you begin?

@hrb_culinary.studio and I explored this question in a North London garden last weekend.

We wanted to find a way to celebrate 10 years of friendship and collaboration. What better way than to co-host a surreal culinary event?

I wanted the experience of biting into something usually impossible to devour, and I knew Helen was exactly the human who could make that happen, deliciously. Let's crunch on ancient geological forms!

We collaborated on a concept shoot in April (images 1-4) exploring marble butter ruins shot in a back garden, and edible microsand photographed in a Brighton beach rockpool, wave splashes from the incoming tide narrowly missing our spot.

For the event itself, edible strata were presented in a glass tank, eaten with shovel spoons. Butter rock slabs were displayed on stone steps, slowly melting as the afternoon passed by.

Meet Sophie le Roux @sopfhe — FAF Photographer & Market Artist

We’re very happy to have Sophie le Roux @sopfhe documenting FAF – Food Art Fair throughout the weekend, while also presenting her own photographic work on sale in the market.

Sophie is a London-based photographer documenting events and performances for artists, curators, galleries and cultural organisations. Her approach to live art is about capturing the nuance of exchange between exhibitor and participant — the fleeting gestures, expressions and encounters that can never quite be repeated.

She sees each event as a kind of time capsule for the art world, preserving the people, atmosphere, clothes and moments that define a particular time.

Alongside her event documentation, Sophie’s photographic practice is driven by wanderlust and a fascination with the colour and texture of natural and constructed worlds. She mostly works with expired 35mm film, using an ever-growing collection of thrifted, purchased and passed-down cameras.

Her work has been exhibited internationally and featured in publications including The British Journal of Photography, The Guardian, HELLO Magazine, Hunger Magazine and The Berliner.

@foodartfair is absolutely delighted to introduce Sophie le Roux @sopfhe taking the lead for photos direction and production.

Sophie le Roux is a London-based photographer documenting events and performances for artists, curators, galleries and cultural organisations.

For her, documenting live art is a commitment to unobtrusively revealing the nuance of exchange between exhibitor and participant. She carries a thrill-seeking approach to capturing moments never to be repeated: decisively shaping distinctive narratives in constantly shifting environments.

Each event captured is also considered a time capsule for the art world: an authentic record of our stances, expressions, and outfits to be revisited in eras to come.

Alongside event documentation, her photographic art practice combines a dedicated wanderlust with a fascination for the sumptuous chromatic and textural aspects of natural and constructed worlds. She mostly uses expired 35mm film, loaded into an array of cameras: thrifted, purchased, passed down.

Sophie also captures private occasions and somatic events in London and Berlin – examples available on request.

She has exhibited artworks at galleries including Ferens, AIR, Ex-Girlfriend, The Glasgow Gallery of Photography, ONCA, and Hôtel des Postes for the Biennale D’Art Contemporain de Strasbourg. Her work has been featured online and in print in The British Journal of Photography, The Guardian, HELLO Magazine, LOLA Berlin, The Berliner, SOFT EIS, Hunger Magazine, The State of The Arts and more.

She is often immersed in music exploration and has created music videos for Amy Hollinrake, Albertine Sarges, Laura Groves, Jenny Moore’s Mystic Business and Uther Moads.

This is Fama M'Boup

On a blissfully warm Tempelhof balcony last month. Long climbs up apartment blocks are expected when I take Berlin portraits, but the number of stairs taken to reach the space was unusually high. So worth the climb; Fama's apartment was peaceful and contained wonderful areas of illumination. After glasses of water and the stereo on, we began to shoot these portraits in a golden patch of balcony light.

@fama_olivia is a vocalist, composer and performer from Berlin. She lives, teaches and creates in the city. Follow some of her projects @oliciamusic & @b__o__d__i__e__s

Simka Senyak 🌳🫆👁️ Urban Forager

A reunion and portrait session with @simkasenyak in the wilds of Treptow, Berlin.

Sense of time and place drifted as Simka led me on a trail through burdock jungles and lilac glades.

They remarked that whenever we're in a green area, we are usually 'standing on salad.' I inhaled the nutmeg porridge aroma of a tansy leaf and misty-eyed, declared this to be most certainly true.

Simka is a foraging instructor, nature guide, mycology enthusiast and artist working with organic materials.

The first in a series of 7 creative human portrait sessions I captured in Berlin. Excitably sharing more soon.
