Disposable / Disponible (I Am) *
{ 3/3 }

Foil paper, acrylic, foam, glue on canvas
24x36"
2026

This work is directly inspired by Jenny Holzer's (@jennyholzerstudio) condom series. Holzer's use of condoms as templates for text connected with me instantly, not only for its visual quality but equally the conceptual nature of it. Of course, Holzer's series is a much broader response to the AIDS epidemic, but what really struck me was the concept of putting vulnerable text on an already vulnerable item. Somehow in this case, it still feels oxymoronic - maybe due to the sterile, pay-to-play nature condoms hold. I've been using text as a vessel for commentary in my practice for a bit now so that connection stuck with me.

The decision to make these large scale and hot pink was not only to make its presence in space known, but equally reevaluate the meaning of this object. What it means to put female iconography on a male-centric object, in a male dominated contemporary space. I think of it the same as my presence as a woman in these spaces, and some of the messaging I try to suggest through my work. More pink in galleries. And sex.

This piece, as well as the other two in this series, functions as a self portrait. While titling this work, I found that disposable sounds eerily similar to the french word "disponible" - meaning 'available'. I think there's an interesting and relevant relationship there.

This was originally going to be a painting but my wonderful professor @lindsay_delaronde gave me the idea to make it into an actual physical object. I don't normally do sculpture but can't envision it any other way.

i don't know if Magic still exists *

Stretched latex, acrylic, led light inside vintage iMac shell
2026

I initially learned how to draw from obsessively copying my best friend's sister's My Little Pony drawings in the 4th grade. In this way, appropriation has been a mainstay in my art for a while - as well as My Little Pony (iykyk). I have been thinking about how I incorporate found imagery in my work and, beyond that, how recognizable symbols and phrases can help further push the ideas and concepts I try to convey.
Not only is this work about my childhood, but it's equally about my adulthood. For every day I wake, I am reminded of my youth and what "once was", which will never be again. I ask myself, are you still watching? - and each time, the answer remains unclear. I've tried to find that magic through other means now, but I still struggle in the pursuit. Yet, the question remained the same: are you still watching?

shoutout to the lady who sold me the iMac shell on marketplace 30 minutes after i messaged her. also first time using latex and i think i may be in love

Thought Daughter
My third year series at UVic
2026

This series is a manifestation of a lot of ideas I've been tapping into my practice recently. I'm really interested in the way healing's fuelled my work, and how this healing has manifested itself in various forms throughout in my life. I'm also interested in how female sexuality is scrutinized and weaponized, specifically against young women, and how this relationship can develop in the online realm. The line between the real and surreal continues to blur by the daily, which is a very dangerous thing, most notably in its passivity. "Thought Daughter" is not only representative of how the post-ironic has become our new reality, but equally how these new/same concepts and ideas can make way for breakthroughs in their respective spaces. I am interested in the tension between the modern and old, in this case attaching my childhood to images/phrases of the now. Thot daughter = THOUGHT daughter = art working through my own traumas + perceptions of girlhood and female sexuality.

This is my most personal work to date, and I certainly don't plan for it to be my last. I hope you find a connection to it 🩷

Individual pieces + titles will be posted soon.

(all credit to jenny holzer as direct inspiration for the condom and signcrushmotorists' album cover for the painting!)

Sophie Jackson and Claire Jorgensen's work explores our increasingly digital culture through the analog methodology of painting.

“This Is Not Real” examines the digital world as a place of fractured connections, where the line between reality and the screen is blurred. Through Jackson’s employment of narrative layering and collage and Jorgensen’s combination of digital manipulation alongside generative images, both artists’ work tackle themes of contemporary angst, simulation, and the disarming hyperreality of our modern technological age.

“This Is Not Real” runs from February 2nd - 7th in the Audain Gallery, Visual Arts Building, 3800 Ring Rd. Join us for a reception with the artists on February 5th from 6 - 8pm. taken in University of Victoria, Visual Arts by @sophjcksn
