I’ve been taking a few walks down memory lane this morning, revisiting old projects, reading old journals, and spotting answered prayers. Looking at these projects, I feel very content. I’m especially grateful when people share pictures and videos of my work living in their home. My brain can hardly comprehend it that something I say with and created lives somewhere else. They walk past it everyday and it’s part of their lives now. I’d love to do more of these soon.

Story time: I wrote out a lot of vows in 2020, both as gifts and as a way to preserve something special when people couldn’t gather. Feeling touched, I put out to my audience that if any of them were essential workers getting married during the pandemic, I’d write out their vows for free. I ended up working on that for a nurse named Stephanie— she sent me the last video as a thank you.

Is anyone else nosy or is it just me? For the curious, this is your chance to see live engraving from the other side of the table.

What you didn’t see is that every time I work on the first piece of the day, I always hold my breath. It always comes out beautifully, but since glass dust in my eyes or lungs isn’t really my vibe, I wear a mask and glasses and the fog is unreasonable. My heart is with everyone wore glasses in 2020.

How to Do Calligraphy on Sea Glass:

1️⃣ I started by washing all the pieces. Some had grit and dust that would get caught in the nib. Then, I laid them out to dry.

2️⃣ I found I had to do each name (at least) twice. The white ink was opaque enough on the second pass. You may be able to skip that with a dark colored ink.

3️⃣ Use a finishing spray to seal. Anytime I’m doing a project with a reasonable expectation of it being touched (with water or by a bunch of hands), I like some form of extra protection. In this case I used a matte spray that kept the same look at the original finish.

4️⃣ And bada-bing bada-boom, wrapped them in bubble wrap, and off they went!

This sea glass was ordered by the client from a shop on Etsy, and it came in lots of colors. So, even though summer’s wrapping up, it’s not too late to have this look at events during this time of year.

Well well well. Look who’s back.
I’ve been in such a weird rut creatively in the last few months. And I’ve been thinking about all the ways I want to create differently— from literal show stoppers to sweet live moments to small touches like this picture where calligraphy is a reward for those who love the details.

I think you may see some experimenting in this next phase in between projects. Let me know when something resonates with you. And I will never say no to inspiration from you if you have ideas— seriously, DM me, call me anytime. Being creative with others is something I’ve missed this year.
