Blue Heron is available on Blu-ray and DVD this November.

Didn’t expect a theatrical release, never mind a physical one — don’t let anyone tell you cinema is dead, she’s alive and thriving.

💙 Tonight's the night: BLUE HERON, the transcendent feature debut from Sophy Romvari, begins streaming exclusively on the Criterion Channel starting at 8pm ET. 💙 In Romvari’s award-winning debut feature a Hungarian Canadian family of six moves into a new home on Vancouver Island, where Sasha, the youngest child, watches her older brother’s increasingly erratic behavior through the haze of an idyllic summer. See why critics are calling BLUE HERON one of the best films of the year. by @sophyromvari

💙 MARK YOUR CALENDARS 💙 Director Sophy Romvari’s stunning feature debut BLUE HERON will begin streaming exclusively on the Criterion Channel starting July 21! Watch a clip from Romvari’s episode of MEET THE FILMMAKERS, which will accompany the film on the Channel before having its Criterion Premieres home-video release later this year. You can also enjoy Romvari’s short films now playing on the Criterion Channel.

In the late 1990s, eight-year-old Sasha (Eylul Guven) and her Hungarian Canadian family relocate to a new home on Vancouver Island, but their fresh start is interrupted by increasingly dangerous behavior from her eldest brother, Jeremy (Edik Beddoes). At wit’s end, their parents are presented with a shattering choice. Audaciously layering the past and the present until they converge in a moment of devastating emotional clarity, BLUE HERON evokes the languid haze of a childhood summer and the hidden tensions rippling beneath it. by @sophyromvari

Isabelle Huppert, Bleak Week, Miss Mousey, La Cérémonie — a fever dream. The last slide is very special to me.

Beautiful behind the scenes photos from one of my favourite days on set, magically documented by @the610photographer who just happened to stumble upon on our little crew shooting on Neck Point in Nanaimo and kindly offered to capture the moment.

I grew up going to this beach and I’m so happy I got to put it on screen for maybe the first time ever?

Can’t stop being corny on main: one of the incredible things about making a film is you get to create your own universe and your own rules. My approach to rehearsaling was to simply build trust and chemistry with each member of the cast leading up to production.

These photos make me so happy but I also miss making this movie every day since we wrapped. by @sophyromvari

Miss Mousey appreciation post! 🐭

The deeply millennial favourite past time of drawing on MS paint simply had to be included in Blue Heron.

I spotted her at a flea market but was told “no” much to my disappointment. Lo and behold, on my birthday that year, I discovered my mom had actually purchased her in secret and surprised me.

Its quite hilarious and lovely to me that she is now (prominently) featured in my film, but not only that, she is the key art on a hat thanks to @humanboyworldwide

Please enjoy my nostalgic musings and my original artwork from 1998 🎨💾 by @sophyromvari
